I like deadlines by Barbara Edwards

When I worked in the business world, I liked having a dead-line.  It kept me focused and goal oriented. Then I became an author and loved not having a deadline. My muse flowed as it wanted and I followed.

Now I’m on a writing deadline and all my  business skills have returned to life.
I took the number of words needed and divided that number  by the days I had to write. I purposely left Sunday free. a day off can clear your head.

The amount I needed to produce was within my regular amount. Wow. I had a handle on what I needed to do.

I have written the pages I planned so far in the timeframe.

I’m not going to get cocky. Life has a way of tripping you when you’re looking the other way.

I don’t know how many people need a deadline. I do need someone to encourage me. Is that the same thing?

When I finished this manuscript and submit it, I will celebrate.

So will my editor  and publisher, I hope.

And you will all get the opportunity to read it.

A ghost of an idea by Barbara Edwards

I

I need a subplot. A nice ghost is appropriate I think. I don’t want to talk about the story I have in the works. I don’t like to go into depth because I’ve found it dries up my juices.

So I need a ghost. but what kind?

To fit the story it needs to be gentle. No screaming in the middle of the night. No throwing items at the hero. No shivers or chills, well maybe some. After all a ghost should affect the people around it.

So I’m leaning toward a girlish laugh when no-one is there. A touch from a cold slender hand. I want the reader to wonder why this ghost is haunting this place. I don’t want any of the obvious reasons. No young female died here. No missing persons from this house.

So why is she here? Oh, I already know but I’m not going to tell you yet. I need to build the story to support her presence.

I can picture her. A sweet smile, slender, youthful, and energetic. She runs through the house, plays under the trees and in the garden.

My hero doesn’t believe in ghosts and the house has no history of haunting. So what has my hero uncovered?

I have to keep working on this story. She’s got me hooked.

So back to the keyboard.

Goal setting by Barbara Edwards

Glacier National Park

The only way to accomplish anything is to set a goal. Authors know about goals. We set them constantly to reach the final goal of a finished manuscript.

What must you do?
Shanondoah Valley

Set a finish date and figure out how many pages must be written daily to reach that number by that date.

This is my big failing. I don’t have a finish date so I fiddle around, do research, read a book, whatever.
Gettysburg

I need to be tough with myself.

I need to make myself work.

With this decision in mind, I made an editor appointment at National. I need to have a finished manuscript to pitch. Well, I do have one, but I’m not happy with it.
Niagra Falls

I want to have another done and it is in the pipe. I’m typing daily, planning to have two manuscripts ready as well as the ones I have in partials.

The importance of goal setting crossed my mind because I did accomplish a ‘bucket list’ goal.
Redwoods

My husband and I have visited all 50 states. Yes, 50. It took us over twenty years, but we are excited and pleased.

Now on to the next one. I think visiting all the National Parks is next. Only 160+.

What happened to Indian Summer? by Barbara Edwards

From my porch
The last few days have been a wonderful break in the Fall weather. I enjoyed the chance to catch up on yard work and cleaning my garden.

To my surprise, none of the weather channels mentioned that we were enjoying Indian Summer. You remember. It always followed a killing frost. The warm days and nights lasted from a day or two to weeks. The weathermen spent hours asking why we’re having such nice days instead of saying enjoy. There seemed to be some effort to connect Indian Summer with global warming although this phenomenon has been around for as long as there have been people to notice.

It got the name Indian Summer from the tribes taking advantage of the weather to continue gathering and hunting to fill their stores of food.

I guess this is another high-jacking of words to twist them into something that needs redefining, like a burglary of a residence is now a home invasion.
What other changes have your noticed? Besides the uni-version of him and her?

Since we’re fast approaching the holidays, I wanted to share one of my short holiday romances.

Breast Lump Biopsy by Barbara Edwards

My biopsy is scheduled and I’m nervous. Last time I was totally scared, but I know what to  expect today.
The hospital called and reminded me what to do.
Be thirty minutes early. Okay. I’ll probably be earlier than that.
No deodorant, powder, lotion or perfume. Okay. Although I did take a shower and scrubbed.
Nothing except my medicine for  three days. No vitamins or supplements or blood thinners. Especiailly the Warfirin that I use to help prevent strokes and heart attacks.
And wear a sports bra for extra support after the biopsy.

I am familiar with the check-in process. I’ve been here several times with my husband, not so many time for myself. Go directly to registration  and bypass the sign-in desk. Security has tightened at the entrance and all visitors need a pass to enter the hospital.I now have a wrist band and my husband a badge.
The mammogram department is on the second floor.
There is a small waiting room and I noticed the women don’t look at each other or talk. I thinks the nerves are showing in a withdrawal from contact.
The staff is friendly. A technician escorts me to the changing room and hands me a garment. I think everyone is familiar with the robe that doesn’t cover everything. I wait again then walk to the biopsy are.
The table looks strange. it has an opening in the surface so my breast can lowered to let the doctor examine it. She’ uses lidocaine to numb the surface after they find the lump area with a sonogram.
Music is playing and I’m relaxed.
It doesn’t take long. I don’t see the needle or any of the equipment.
I don't know if I'll get a chance to finish this after my biopsy. I'm leaving for the hospital in a few minutes.

Sit in the darn chair by Barbara Edwards

Barbara Edwards with another family distratcion
One of the biggest problems of any author is ignoring distractions and concentrating on writing. I’ve ben so guilty of doing ‘other’ things and pushing my writing to the back of my desk. Let me share a few.
I signed up for an on-line class on using Scrivener. I told myself I need to know how to use this really helpful writing tool. I did. And I do. the class was helpful in that I learned how to keep my efforts all in one handy area. Now I need to make some efforts.
Can you believe I went on Pinterest to do research? I had to ask my granddaughter how to use search, but it did work. I wanted photos of Afghanistan and found dozens that I had to search through. A time waster? Yes and no. I could have gone to the library for books, checked on google, or waited until I was ready to start my manuscript.
Lilies in my gaarden

Another time hog? Email is one. I spend up to two hours a day deleting emails. Oh yeah. Is this necessary? Another yes and no. I have several loops that are for promo. I retweet, I share on Facebook, I comment on other blogs. This gets my name out there so when my books need promo it is reciprocated.
I did mention my husband had a medical problem this past winter. We’re still going to doctors on a regular basis and it cuts into my writing time like an axe. I have tried taking my laptop with me and writing, but the ‘other’ stuff takes over. I have used that time for the emails so it isn’t a total loss.
I use my gardening to push writing back. After all, those weeds don’t pull themselves out of the ground. Maybe the gardening is an okay distraction. It clears my mind. I plot as I work. And in the end I have the benefit of some pretty flowers.
What do you do that keeps you from your writing?
