The Christmas Seal Part 2 by Rolynn Anderson

After a day of interviewing Kaye’s employees, detecting land mines everywhere, Hawke Storm should have called the General to tell him exactly where his commander could stick Hawke’s consultancy with E-Rase.
Even if he wouldn’t.  Couldn’t.
He observed Kaye’s staff knocking down happy-hour beers and wine as if they’d been parched for a week.  Thank God he’d bought chips and salsa to absorb the alcohol.  Afterward he’d have to arrange for rides home.  A look around the room tipped him off: Three non-drinkers out of eleven.  Kaye was sipping on her wine.  Call her the fourth designated driver.
As he kibitzed with Melinda, a bright twig of a woman who looked all of thirteen, he kept his eye on Kaye.  She was the reason he would never complain to the General.  When he’d walked into her office this morning, with a list of questions and observations, he took one look at her and lost his ability to speak. Her short blonde hair set off forest green eyes that focused on his as if measuring depth in fathoms.  She stood rebar straight behind her desk, tall and lithe in her red form-fitting jacket, her breasts framed by the cut.  Black pants, hugged tight all the way to ankle-high black leather boots.  At her “Hello, I’m Kaye Rourke,” he almost stumbled in his forward movement to shake her hand, her voice reminding him of his favorite scotch, smoky, rich, and warm.  Nascent energy vibrated from her so the light in the room seemed to pulse, but her handshake was firm and instead of disappearing inside his big paw, her long, strong fingers grasped his with purpose.
He may have held her hand a few seconds longer than he should have.  Truth to be told, ten minutes after meeting Kaye, Hawke had her back.  The speed of his connection with her rattled him a little; he’d bonded with some of his Seal buddies as quickly, but never with a civilian woman.
Loyalty. The first Seal question was: who, in her fledgling team, would augment a successful team, putting others in the group before themselves?  Sorting the obsequious from the truly loyal had been his all-day task.  Since tech types were not his norm, he faced his first challenge.  These people were all-brain and would probably stereotype Hawke as half-brain and half-brawn.  They didn’t need to know he’d taken computers apart and put them together when he was a teen and his Seal team called him ‘Techman.’  The General had done his research before he tapped Hawke to help Kaye, but he and the General decided their strategy was to keep Hawke’s skills a secret.
Some things are better kept under the vest.
“Melinda, mind if I have a moment with Hawke?” Kaye said, her hand on the woman’s shoulder.
When the woman went to join the happy-hour others, Hawke said, “Ready to talk about fallout?”
She frowned, then her expression cleared.  “Oh, you mean about my long line of visitors today, reporting in after each one spoke with you.”  A sip of wine, then, “I took notes.  You did too.  We’ll have a reckoning, and merge our observations, yes?”
With a nod he said, “Sorry to surprise you about the bonus.”
Eyebrow up, she gazed deeply in his eyes once again, unsettling him.
“A catalyst,” he said.
“To gauge loyalty.”
“As well as determine their sense of team.”
Kaye surveyed the room where twelve large cubicles mazed the middle of the gigantic space.  “First thing, the walls come down.”
“It’s time.  Your tasks are complex; they require fluid grouping and regrouping.”
“I see that.”
“Yes.  Tell them your decision to let the cubicles go was yours from the start; you used me to help with the problem-solving format.”
“Thank you,” Kaye said.  “Now, the bonus.  You do know, don’t you, that we haven’t made a cent on our concept?  Out of our capital we can pay salaries for one more year, tops.  Contributors are excited about our product, but nervous about the complications.”  She shook her head.  “Bonuses may never come.
“Understood.  What I said to each employee was: ‘I may suggest to your boss that she consider a bonus incentive package.  Which employee deserves a bonus?’ ”
She tipped her glass in the direction of Joe, whose sour return-look made her smile.  “Joe named himself.”
“Yup.”
“Melinda, Frank, Suzanne and Bert named me; they came to my cubicle to tell me so.”
“Add Charlotte and Jill.  They say you’re doing the heavy work; you deserve the money.  They’re worried your car’s going to give up on you; said you need a new one.”
“So you’ve drawn a sociogram of who supports whom.”
“Or not.  Frank’s a sycophant.  He came to you pretending affinity.  He wouldn’t look me in the eye; sweat beaded on his forehead; words too carefully chosen.”
“Damn.  He has two kids.”
“Not all parents are good.”
Kaye said nothing.
“I’m driving Craig home.  One beer to many.”
She stared at him.
He shrugged.  “Interesting guy.  Didn’t get enough time with him today.”
Kaye closed her eyes a moment, opened them and turned to observe her staff.

Hawke had to resist the urge to hug her, but his job was to steel her for what was coming: a cascade of bad news.

Part 3, the conclusion of my short suspense story, comes tomorrow.  If this is a holiday weekend for you and your family, I hope you are savoring the moments.  I'm tipping a cup of cheer your way!

The Christmas Seal Part 1 by Rolynn Anderson

This was the absolute last time Kaye Rourke kissed anyone under the mistletoe, a desperate tactic to prevent E-Rase, her Sedona, California start-up company, from implosion.
Friday, quitting time and an impromptu office happy hour.   She’d agreed to let her new hire give her a peck on her cheek under the offending sprig, startled when he grabbed her, dipped her to his left, smooched her on the lips, and let her up quickly, releasing her so fast, she had to grab onto the doorjamb for balance.  Amid the whistles and clapping of her ten employees, she slowly closed her mouth, straightened her fitted jacket, and glared at her kisser: Hawke Storm, former Navy Seal.
Hawke’s goofy grin and deep bow in front of Kaye’s raucous crew sent heat crawling up her neck.  She raised an eyebrow at her employees, her usual get-serious signal, but she couldn’t hold the pose.  Instead, she laughed, a sound foreign to her after months of stress. Nothing seemed funny about being boss of the number one start-up in America, a business teetering toward failure.  Married to her job; social life-nil.
She took a deep breath and focused on the flurry of events since she’d met Hawke early that morning.
“Show me E-Rase’s vision and long-range goals.  Please.”  He’d demanded the information so abruptly after he’d introduced himself, Kaye’s heart started pounding.  She wanted help in the worst way, but his intensity unnerved her.  Though she got busy at her desk while he read through her business plan, she found herself focusing on at the top of his head instead of her schedule for the day.  The brown whorl in his hair brought out boy instead of critic.  A touchstone.
An hour later, he looked up from the notebook, his brown eyes boring into hers.  He had a more-than-Roman nose, slightly misshapen from a break or two, a small scar on his chin, and a hint of a tattoo showing through the open ‘v’ of his shirt.  Damn, he looked more like a bouncer at a high-end nightclub, than a hired consultant.
He said, “This helps.  I studied your website over the weekend; googled and facebooked all your employees.  Two of them, Brandon and Marsha, need to keep details about the company off the internet.  Take a look; you’ll see what I mean.  Don’t know if it matters, but I think they are lovers, or at least, they’re moving that direction.”
Kaye nodded, numbly.  She’d missed the signs.
“I think I understand your concept.”  He paused.  “A basketball team owner already has the rights to an app that disappears text messages.  I checked their website.  What makes you think you can erase e-mail?”
She'd gestured at the men and women working in their cubicles.  “I hired the best staff in the world.  They’re primed to make e-mail messages self-destruct in twenty-four hours,” she said, pride deepening her voice.
“But the government questions your project’s legality; foreign leaders would kill for the technology.  Wiki-leakers would just as soon you failed; as would all the fat-cat private servers you and I pay to shuttle our e-mail back and forth.  You’d take down a big portion of Yahoo, Gmail, and Earthlink’s income.”
Kaye pushed back from her desk and crossed her legs.  “No need to sugarcoat.”  She gave a wry smile. “The snafus made by Clinton, Powell, Podesta, and the rest, regarding sensitive e-mail, are compelling enough to come up with a way to delete messages forever.  The government has found expensive ways to privatize and collect classified information, but for the most part, Americans don’t want their e-mails ‘kept.’  In fact, most citizens remain naïve about how public their e-mail messages are, and how embarrassingly permanent they can be.  Our app provides privacy for Americans, upholding their constitutional rights.”
“And hides the crooked tactics of criminals and terrorists.”
Kaye blinked at his quick grasp of her problems.  Now, if he could only help her solve them.
He’d risen from his chair and set the notebook on her desk.  “I’ve got enough for now.  Off I go to meet your staff.”  Tossing two words over his shoulder, “Loyalty check,” he’d trooped off for the next eight hours to huddle with her employees.
“Trust me,” he’d said, as he arranged plastic glasses next to the booze for the impromptu happy hour at the end of the workday.  “Trust me,” he whispered before he kissed her under the mistletoe.  Was plucking the guy out of General Emerald’s Group too impulsive a move on her part?
A glass of wine appeared in her hand, offered by Hawke.  Before she could thank him, he walked away to talk to Craig, her operations manager.  Kaye met the narrowed eyes of her VP, Joe Miller.
“What the hell, Kaye?  We don’t have time for this nonsense.  You told me the guy was supposed to bring structure to our chaos, not cause more.”
“We’re in deep, Joe.  You and I might be business majors, but our issues are beyond what we learned in school.”  She hitched a shoulder and took a sip of wine.  “I’ll take the hit for the hire; Hawke asked me to trust him, so I will.”
Another snort from Joe.  “Hawke?  Storm?  That’s got to be a made-up name.  He’s all of what?  Thirty-five?  Discharged, maybe?  Did you check his service record: probably riddled with trauma, now with a superman complex.  A grunt bailing out a tech start-up?  Ridiculous.”
“The General said he’d matched a guy with my needs.  Hawke quit the Navy because of a leg injury; his brain and Seal skills are intact.”
Joe tipped a water bottle to his lips and drank half of it.  With an irritated look, he said, “Juvenile tactics, Kaye.  Geesus, kiss the boss to lighten the mood?  Look at him chit-chatting with our people, a party-boy on steroids.  An un-credible hulk.”
For a moment, Kaye viewed Hawke through Joe’s eyes.  The man was huge, at least six foot three.  She’d never seen, in person, someone with such wide shoulders and thick biceps, his blue dress shirt tight on his arms and closefitting on his torso.  He wore navy pants and loafers without socks, dressing on a level better than her jeans-clad employees. His brown hair was about an inch longer than a soldier might wear.  Brown eyes.  Memorable lips.
She cleared her throat.  “Joe, I’m going to mingle.  Clearly that’s what Hawke is modeling; let’s go with the program.”
“Shit,” Joe said under his breath, even as he moved with her toward the group.  Quietly, he said to Kaye so only she could hear.  “We’ve found evidence of sabotage, Kaye.  People are trying to steal our ideas and destroy our company.  This is no time to party.”

At the same time Joe stalked away, Hawke turned his face to her and winked.  Warmth crept up her neck again, but the feeling was far from comforting.  Joe’s criticism filled her brain.  She’d hired Hawke to save her company; maybe his strategy would bring its ruination.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of 'The Christmas Seal' tomorrow.  We fiction writers pluck ideas right out of the newspapers, and you guessed it, some of our soldiers, the best of the best, Navy Seals and Army Rangers, are taking Silicon Valley by storm.  I'll tell you more about this clever strategy after Part 3.  Check out my books at http://www.rolynnanderson.com

When a Pet Becomes One of the Characters by Vonnie Davis

Grandchildren's allergies and our traveling mean no pets for us. So I often put them in my books. I think we can tell a lot about a character by the way he or she reacts to animals. Plus, they bring a furry or feathery delight to the story.

I've talked before about my wounded warrior series, former SEALs who come to their retired CO's ranch in the Hill Country of Texas. Eagle Ridge Ranch provides a serene place  away from the hurried life and loud noises of the fast paced world to heal emotionally from the effects of war. There are physical wounds, of course, but the PTS elements play a larger role. The series is called "Black Eagle Ops."

One of the characters is Nance, the team's service dog. She's introduced in chapter one. Mail call has just happened and Dustin, the hero, has received a box from Eagle Ridge Ranch. One he's in no mood to open. Remember, these are hardened war veterans. Their language is salty with no filter, so I'll space out the worst words.

A muted “Set Fire to the Rain” drifted from the box. What the hell? That was the team’s theme song they sang as they drove away from a fight. What was his old Commander from SEAL Team Five up to now? Dustin ripped open the box only to find a cell phone and a note. “If you don’t call me ten minutes after receiving my awesome, one-of-a-kind gift, I’m calling you, you candy-as$ed ba$tard. And I’ll keep calling until you answer. ZQ”
The music stopped, and Dustin sighed. Thank God. When he arrived here eight months ago, ZQ was waiting and sat with him for the first three days. He talked to Dustin when he wanted to be left alone and read him poetry by Walt Whitman, which he liked but was too stubborn to admit. ZQ’s actions only reinforced what Dustin had always known; he cared for his men.
The song started again. Ah hell, ZQ. Give me a f---in’ break here. He swiped his index finger across the phone’s screen only to find a picture of Nance, her tongue lolling crooked from her mouth. Her one ear missing after being shot off. The day it happened as they fought their way through Al Hasakah in Eastern Syria, her handler JJ—Jerryl Jacoby—had nearly lost his mind. Hell, they all had.
They’d grown somewhat accustomed to the screams and moans of wounded men, but to hear their furry girl’s yelps ripped at what goodness remained intact within their souls.
On the cell’s photo, a sign hung around Nance’s neck that read, “Call me! Press 2.”
“Damn you, Zane Quinlan.” Dustin muttered as he shook the phone in frustration. The Commander always did know his men’s weak spots and played them to his advantage. He claimed Dustin’s was his curiosity, which it wasn’t. Still, just how had ZQ gotten ahold of Nance?
Dustin pressed two and, after a couple rings, Nance barked a response. He talked to her a minute, teasing her like he always had. “Dance for me Nance! Dance.” Evidently recognizing his voice, she whined and howled. There was some slurping, and Dustin smiled for the first time since forever. The damn, sweet dog was licking the phone to get to him…and he lost it.
Neither realizing the explosion had taken his leg from the middle of his calf down, nor seeing his mother’s tears when he initially reached Walter Reed Hospital or finding out he’d missed his dad’s funeral… not even his wife’s—hell, ex-wife, now—revulsion when she saw his damaged body tore at him so deeply as this dog’s reaction. Why the hell was that?
JJ’s firm voice in the background calmed her, while Dustin wiped his damp face.
Then ZQ took over the conversation.
“Hey, Dust, I knew if anyone could get to you, it would be Nance. Took you long enough to call me.” His team leader sounded like he’d just finished gargling with razor blades. Shit, Dustin wouldn’t be surprised if he had. The old man was hardcore. Not that he was really ancient, but any officer who’d survived fifteen years or more in an official capacity in special forces was respectfully labeled as “Old Man,” just not to his face.
“Is she at the ranch or are you visiting JJ?”
“Hell, they’re here at Eagle Ridge with me. Have been for over two months. JJ adopted her when his enlistment was up. The dog still had some time to serve but, having lost an ear, the big wigs gave her an early retirement.”
“I figured he would do his best to keep her, as tight as those two were. Nance trusted JJ with her life.”
“Still does. I was coming from the stables when this god awful racket echoed on my dirt lane. A man rode a vintage Harley with a sidecar, of all things. The dude wore a black leather vest a few shades darker than him and a black brain bucket for a helmet. And who was sitting in the sidecar, strapped in and wearing a matching black brain bucket with “War Vet” and a Trident decal on the front? Ol’ Nance. Pretty as you please.”
Ice cubes rattled in a glass, and the sound of his sipping and swallowing filtered over the phone. ZQ was probably into his treasured double-malt Scotch. He hacked a laugh. “Soon as our pup saw me, she damn near went berserk. JJ stopped the bike and unhooked her. She cleared the side and ran like hell for my outstretched arms. I ain’t ashamed to admit I was already on my knees, crying like a damn fool baby. There was always something extra special about our Nance.”
Once Dustin is released from the hospital, he  moves to Eagle Ridge Ranch near Wounded Warrior Falls. His first meal prepared by Junebug, ZQ's mother, is a real experience.
“I love hearing about my son’s SEAL life.” June, referred to by most everyone as Junebug, carried over a bowl of mashed potatoes. Then she placed two clean chrome dog’s dishes—one full of dry food and the other full of water and ice cubes—at the empty chair at the foot of the table. JJ nodded and Nance quietly jumped onto the chair. Junebug stood behind the dog and tied a bib around her furry neck. I can’t believe I’m seeing this. A damn bib on a SEAL service dog.
Junebug sat and looked at Dustin. “In this house, we say grace before we eat and hold hands while the head of the family prays.” She reached over and ZQ took his mom’s hand and, when she extended her other hand toward Nance, the dog placed his paw on top of hers, as if the canine knew what all was happening. Nance did the same for JJ’s hand and he whispered what a good girl she was. She licked his thumb and looked at him with adoring eyes.
If that dog mutters “amen,” I will crap myself laughing.

Vonnie Davis welcomes readers to Wounded Warrior Falls! In this sizzling contemporary series, broken heroes meet women worth fighting for—and discover the healing power of love.

Navy SEAL Dustin Franks can handle physical pain; it’s his soul that needs mending. After losing part of his leg in an explosion, the panic triggered by his PTSD nearly drives him over the edge. So Dustin retreats to the Eagle Ridge Ranch, a charming hideaway tucked into the Hill Country of Texas. There he finds solace in the arms of a shy beauty who reawakens desires he thought he’d lost forever—and who makes him want to lose control, just when he needs it most.

Kelcee Todd sees beyond Dustin’s scars to the real man beneath: fiercely protective, strong yet tender. She wants nothing more than to feel his battle-hardened hands on her body. However, Kelcee is not the ordinary small-town girl she appears to be. Her brother is a killer with ties to the Russian mob, and after her testimony put him in prison, he’s out and eager for revenge. Now Dustin is her best defense, even if it could cost him everything. Kelcee could never ask him to make that sacrifice . . . but she can’t stop him, either.
