#Binge-watching with Christine DePetrillo

I consider watching television and movies research for writing. I thought I'd share some things I've been binge-watching recently. If you haven't seen some of these, you might want to take a peek.

1. Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman - An oldie, but a goody. I love period pieces that transport be to another time and place. I've always thought the character of Dr. Mike was so well done. A true testimony to the strong female spirit.

2. Anne of Green Gables - Speaking of strong female spirit, is there anyone better than Anne? I simply adore Megan Follows as well. She is such a gifted actress and I first fell in love with her as Anne.

3. Black Mirror - A Twilight Zone-esque show but with a futuristic flavor. I'll admit some of the episodes are... unsettling. Mostly because they are not stretching the truth all that much. I'd just like to hang out with the writers of this show because they must be super interesting to have the ideas they have.

4. Everything Sucks - If you love 90s alternative rock, you'll like this show. The soundtrack is admittedly better than the plot, but you'll love the characters because you can no doubt find a little piece of yourself in at least one of them. It's also a good show to keep you entertained while you're waiting for Stranger Things to come out with a new season.

5. Cheers - Just because everyone needs a place "where everybody knows your name."

6. Bitten - I like to rewatch this to get in touch with my inner werewolf. And Greyston Holt is so nice to look at.

7. Hallmark Movies - Sometimes a night just needs a little love, you know?

8. Beauty and the Beast - Disney come to life? Yeah, count me in.

What binge suggestions do you have for me?

Great picks, Chris! I do most of my TV watching with hubby, so mostly I'm binging on more thriller/mystery type shows, which I love. Saturday nights I pick a movie though, often Hallmark! Here are our most-binged shows:

24
We didn't watch this during its original run, but man did we get sucked into the story once we started watching. It was like we couldn't stop! I remember feeling at a loss when the final episode ended! (The sequels never quite matched the original, for me.)

Stranger Things
So good...

Man in the High Castle
Year one was phenomenal. Year two was iffy. We're waiting for year three, hoping they've gotten back to the original level.

Outlander
Hubby is starting to lose interest in this one, but I could watch Jamie and Clair all day.

Any of the Marvel series on Netflix: Jessica Jones is my favorite. Hubby loves Daredevil, but I zone out at all the fight scenes. (To me they're like car chases, the same thing over and over...boring.)

Mozart in the Jungle
Another that was so good in the first year, we couldn't stop watching. Later years got a little weird. I think it's been canceled.
(One of the few on my list that's lighter, with comedy!)

The Americans
Anyone who grew up during the Cold War might enjoy this one. And hubby and I both worked for the FBI in D.C. around the time period of the show, which adds a bit more interest for us. It's in its final year and we're having fun coming up with possible endings - who gets arrested, or worse, who goes back to the Soviet Union/Russia, who stays.

That was fun, Chris! Thanks for sharing your list.
Leah

Ha, Christine, I'm a binge watcher, but we definitely have different tastes. The only one on your list that I watch is Cheers, and I LOVE it! My favorite all time show, ever, is Dexter. Justified is second. I loved Sons of Anarchy, Bates Motel, Walking Dead, etc. So...not your cup of tea. :) I'll pop over and enter your giveaway. Thanks for the opportunity!

Great list. My husband and I are bingers, yet since I only watch TV from 8-10:00 pm, that's not a BIG binge. OUTLANDER and DOC MARTIN and BOSCH and BREAKING BAD and HOMELAND and SEVEN SECONDS...just to start. Have enjoyed THE AMERICANS; love MADAM SECRETARY on the reg. networks. Thanks for the giveaway chance!

I don't binge watch at all--I'd never get anything done. I have my favorite shows that I watch in the evening (The Voice, Survivor, Blindspot), but that's only once a week. My girls binge watch when they're home from school on break. Usually, I find it annoying, but last summer I got kind of hooked on Gilmore Girls. Except the characters talk too fast. That grated on my nerves. LOL

You mentioned my favorite thing--binge-watching. CHEERS (because I never watched it when it was on); STARGATE (the original and a couple of the spinoffs); GILMORE GIRLS. DEATH IN PARADISE is our latest. Funny mystery on a Caribbean island with a fish-out-of-water main character. Usually, I go for light; Hubs likes dark. But D in P appeals to both of us.

Gilmore Girls is what I binge when I'm with my closest friend (who lives in Iowa!) and my daughter-in-law, if we get a "girls' night" type thing). They do talk fast, but I heard it was intentional, sort of, so they could fit the dialog into the show's time limit!

I haven’t binge watched in forever. When I did, The Closer which became Major Crimes. Got into Rizolli and Eiles (sp?) briefly after I read one of Tess Gerittson’s books. Other than that, it’s news. Which I’m even thinking of taking a break from.

Some great new suggestions for me. Thanks, ladies! I should clarify too that while binge-watching, if it is a show I've seen before, I only half watch it while I'm writing. Otherwise, as you pointed out, Jannine, I'd never get anything done. But all TV watching is research, right? ;)

Not a big TV person. I have a couple of shows that we record and watch during dinner. I just can't stay up late enough to see them. I think the only thing I've binge-watched is the Golden Girls when my husband used to travel for work and I couldn't sleep. They'd have multiple episodes on at night. Falling asleep is no longer and issue for me.
