In the zone

I'm working on a multi-book series. I have for several years. I have 4 books done, working on the 5th, and plan 9 in the first part of the series. Then 6 more. If I live so long...

I usually work on this series starting in the spring and going for the remainder of the year. I often spend Jan-May writing a mystery or two. I'm always worried that I won't be able to fall back into the right voice, pacing, 'world' when I come back to the series.

But you know what? It's the simplest thing in the world for me. This is the one thing I work on where I can always easily slip into the zone. I hear the characters in my head, I can visualize where they are, I can sense what they're feeling. Maybe it's because I've known them for so long, or maybe it's because they're always in the back of my mind, but when I'm with this series, I am in the zone, #amwriting.

It's really all any author can wish for, isn't it? To feel so connected to characters you feel you're channeling their story, not creating it.

I think it's going to be a fun year ...

I agree, JL. The connection to characters is key. Are you writing the whole series before publishing them?

I enjoy writing series, too. Feeling as if you're revisiting old friends and catching up on their lives is the best. Have a fun summer!

Tried to comment and it didn't go. Here it is again. Love your signature Writer at Play. Kind of says it all. Enjoy, JL.

I love writing series. Like Vonnie says it's like visiting old friends. Good luck with your series, JL.
