It's scary until you consider it

A friend of mine has a husband who was recently laid off. Not surprising given these tough times, but it caught him by surprise. He's near retirement age, but he was still panicking.

Do we have enough money for retirement?

That's a question that I think haunts a lot of people. How much is enough? When do you know that you have enough?

She's managed to calm his worries with a couple of trips to their financial planner, but it's a worry that's on everyone's mind: do I have enough?

Do I have enough money for retirement? Enough readers to sustain my career? Enough healthy days left in me? One person's 'enough' is another person's 'wealth' -- and that's important to keep in mind. Whenever I start to panic about *anything* I try to see it from another perspective.

And you know what? I almost always have enough....

Having enough often means learning the distinction between wants and needs. So says my husband as I gush about something I want. We really have more than we need. Two cars and since we go almost everywhere together, we can only ride in one at a time. A big lawn mower when we hire someone to cut our grass. Four closets full of clothes. Extra dishes packed in boxes in the garage. Yes, we have more than enough. We've been blessed in many ways. For us, the BIG question is health-related. Do we have enough healthy days remaining?

An excellent attitude, JL. Enough for me is being able to write. Hopefully the writing will start bringing in enough to continue to make that possible!

Yes, who knows how much is enough? Good thing to consider. I will just do the best I can and hope it's enough when the time comes. :-)

Having experienced Hubs being downsized 4 times, I've learned the lesson well about wants vs needs. Scary times. We did without to pay bills. During good times, we saved. How much is enough for retirement? Who knows? As Alicia says, we do the best we can.
