Photo Contest by Alison Henderson

As you read this, I am visiting my daughter in Chicago, taking her and her best friend to the outlet mall for a girls' shopping day. OG is at home, manning the fort. God help us all.

If you read my post two months ago, you know that OG gave me a new camera for Christmas. I've been playing around with it since then and have managed to take a few nice pictures. That's a good thing, because I recently learned the Carmel Valley Garden Club has decided to add a photo competition to the Garden Show the first weekend in May. There are several categories, and I think it would be fun to enter at least a couple of them.

Here's the photo I plan to enter in the Landscape category. I took it with my new camera, and I think it's stunning.

Where I need your help is deciding among several photos for the Wildlife category. Here are some of my favorites, all taken in my yard. If you had to choose one, which would you choose?

All the entries have to be 8" x 10", and OG has offered to print them for me. All I have to do is choose.

Thanks for your input!

All the photos are fabulous...which makes it a "challenge" to choose. But, in the deer do look like their smiling for you! Good luck with the contest.

"Stunning" is right on the landscape! Or glorious. For wildlife, I like the deer sunbathing on the patio/deck (whatever that is), but I reallly like the hummingbird one. It looks like he's suspended in mid-air! I wonder if you could crop it in a little to make him (her?) more the focus, without losing clarity/sharpness and still print for 8x10. They are all lovely though, and I'm sure whatever you pick will get lots of ooohs and aaahs. :-) Good luck!

I adore them all, but smiled at the cuteness of the birds all walking in a row as if they were the Garden Inspection Committee come calling. I think that's my favorite because it's so unique.

Beautiful, stunning yes. As far as the wildlife, tough choice. I would think the first deer picture or the lizard. Good luck!!

The landscape is lovely. I'd pick the one with the deer lying down because it dominates the frame. I like the close-ups, so if you fiddled with the hummingbird so we could see it fluttering...that would be a great pic. Nice composition, Alison!

I like the deer laying down one. It has good composition and is sharply focused. From a photo quality perspective (which I assume they look at in addition to subject of photo) the hummingbird is also terrific, but I like the deer better. The misty morning photo is wonderful. What a fun contest!

The landscape pic is fabulous. As for as the wildlife goes, I like the little lizard. The fusha in the corner adds color while the lizard is sharp and clear on the white stone. I couldn't see the hummingbird even when I enlarged the picture. I thought it was a dead leaf. Oops. Old eyes.

Stunning for sure. There's no other word for that landscape shot. A true winner. For the others, I'd say lying down deer or hummingbird. Good luck with your entries.

Oh my gosh....stunning, magnificent!!!! LOVE it!! I am in the minority, but I also love the lizard one. I was struck by the contrast of the gorgeous flower and the lizard. And, yes, what Diane said. ;) But, I'm no professional. :)

I like the lizard and flower best but they're all great. Good luck!

Thanks so much, everyone! I'm home, the laundry is done, and the larder is re-stocked. Now I can start working on my photos. I think I'll work on the resting deer and the lizard to see which comes out the best.
