HOW NOT TO MOVE by Brenda Whiteside

The once upon a time farm
I'm sitting on the couch in our RV, just enough room for my feet on the floor in front of me, and the sun beginning to slice through the shade screens on the windows. We don't normally come to the RV park, or the Ranch as we call it, in the summer. Tonto Basin is as hot as Phoenix most days this time of year. Thankfully, it cools down at night, unlike the Valley of the Sun.

This year, we had no choice. We listed the farm in Paulden and expected it would take at least the summer to sell. We had two offers for full price the first day and an additional cash offer the second. We accepted one of them and the next thirty days whizzed by as we made some needed repairs and packed. We did take one day to look around the Prescott area for a rental, but within a couple of hours we knew finding the right place wasn't going to happen in the time we had to get relocated.

View from RV patio last December
In the end, we located a storage facility, packed most of our household into it and headed to the RV to spend the next few months figuring out what we want to do. The only problem is we needed some of those things we kept at the house. So, here I sit surrounded by boxes...and there are just as many outside on the patio. The heat will move in by mid morning. How everything will fit, and how I'll keep cool while unpacking is the challenge.

Meanwhile, the fourth book in my series is on my editors desk. Book five is still in my head. The need to get it into the computer will drive me to get this unpacking done sooner rather than later. Wish me luck!

When I was young with fewer possessions, I enjoyed moving and fixing up a new place. Now we both have a lifetime of memories, plus what we've accumulated in 12 years of marriage. Moving from Maryland to Virginia nearly did us in. We tossed and packed for 6 months and hired a moving van. I can't imagine doing what you're doing. My nerves would be a wreck. You're a stronger woman than I. Much...much stronger.

Sounds like you and your husband are set for an adventure, Brenda! My biggest adventure this week was exploring a local garden center trying to figure out what I could afford to buy (knowing it would probably die once in my hands). Wishing you luck with navigating around all your stuff, and putting book five down "on paper"!

Yup, been there and done that. It's such a funny feeling to put households in storage and be homeless...but quite freeing as well. Now, if you can just keep cool! This is a wonderful new chapter in your life...enjoy it to the hilt!

I did that sort of thing in my youth. Dumped possessions here an there to drive cross country to live for several months. I can't imagine it at this stage of life! Best of luck finding a place to land, Brenda!

I feel your pain, Brenda. When we moved after 25 years in Minnesota, we got rid of a ton of stuff but still had quite a bit. Since the new house wouldn't be habitable for a year, we had the movers stack all the boxes and furniture in the garage at the house (which was under construction) while we lived in our vacation condo. Periodically, I would need something I'd packed and have to search through boxes to find it. I did fine, but the whole process was so stressful for OG he had a stroke. Take care of yourselves while you figure out your next step!

Vonnie, I'm with you on enjoying it years ago. Not so much now.
Adventure...that's the word I keep using, Leah. Hope it makes this mess more tolerable. LOL
Yes, Rolynn, weird, not knowing when I'll see my "things" again.
It's an "adventure" Jannine.
It's harder on hubby than me, too, Alison. Hope he fares better than OG did!

Oh, Brenda, I both envy you and sympathize. After nearly forty years in one place, and four kids who moved out then back in more than once, I'm getting the bug to sell and go smaller. Last time we sold a house, my OG put it on the market 'for the heck of it to see what would happen'. You guessed it, the house sold within a week and we were like you, nowhere to go. Don't want to go that way again, but it would be nice to take off, like you, on another of life's adventures. Best of luck with all of it!

I've moved more times than I wish to admit to, and twice internationally. It sucks the life blood out of you but is a great way to get rid of the dross in your life and move on both physically and mentally. Still, it is often listed along with death and divorce as one of the 3 most traumatic experiences...just saying... Enjoy!

Early morning coffee time so I can take a moment to check email and posts. Margo, I can't imagine living somewhere that long. The longest time we spent in any home was eight years.

Andrea, you know. And love that moving ranks as one of the 3. It didn't use to for me but I will confer now.

As I've mention numerous times, we moved a lot--not as much as some of you have, though. This last time was the best. I've been happier here than any other house we've lived in. Since we packed our own things (as opposed to movers doing it), I made sure contents were well marked. Still, I had to dig around looking for one certain thing. After nearly 3 yrs, I still haven't found a couple of things. Probably in a box in the garage that neither of us felt the need to empty. Good luck, Brenda, finding your new home. Try to stay cool.
