Way
back, a long time ago, I lived in Germany for three years. I fell in love with
the Alps, the mountain range that belongs to several countries including
Austria. A couple of trips to Austria, and I fell in love with Austria, too.
And the people. What warm, friendly people!
Hartmut and his wife Uli in Austria |
Fast
forward to 2016, and I have a book releasing worldwide on March 30, which just
happens to be set in Austria. A Legacy of Love and Murder is the third book in
my Love and Murder Series.
My
love of Austria, and my memories lent much to the story, but I would’ve been
lost if it hadn’t been for a special Austrian friend of mine. Not only did he
correct my German (the primary language of the Austrian people), helped me with
so many other details such as food and dress and geography, but he also
supplied me with his name for one of my characters, Hartmut.
I
didn’t meet Hartmut when we visited Austria. Harte, came to us years later as one
of the hockey players on the Austrian team that played in the Easter Tournament
along with my son’s team. We boarded the players, and Harte was placed with us.
We became fast friends. It was as if I’d known this young man all of my life.
Over the years, he’s visited us several times, and my husband and I visited him
and his family in Austria. Such good memories.
I
hope my love of his country comes through in my words.

Your love of the country came through in your post. I'm sure it will in your book.
That's good! Thanks, Nightingale.
We had an Austrian exchange student at our house for a week a few years ago. She was a lovely girl with impeccable English, and we had a lot of fun hosting her. I also worked for an Austrian beer importer, my first job out of college. Wolfgang. Gotta love that name. And our neighbor here in Tahoe is an Austrian. So I guess I have a few Austrian connections! I know this book will be a big hit!
You're practically Austrian, Jannine!
It sounds as though you feel about Austria as I do about Paris. I imagine the architecture there is charming, to say nothing of the scenery. I'm looking forward to reading the book.
Love the whole foreign exchange student experience for all the adventures you mention, Brenda. It's the people you make friends who matter, but I have to say that the more time you spend in a different country, the better your chance of describing it well. My newest 'set' is Aix en Provence, where I just spent a month this fall. My memories of it are sharp enough for me to build a novel around it! Good luck with the Austria book!
Sounds like Vonnie and Rolynn--you both love France!
What everyone else said about your love of the country, Brenda. I'm looking forward to reading this book.
Well, Brenda, they do tell us to 'write what you know'. Sounds like you are doing that. Congrats on the world wide release! May all of your series bring world wide success!
Thanks, Diane and Margo.
Congratulations on the upcoming release-how exciting! Hosting traveling players must be such a neat way to meet people from different areas!
Austria sounds like a fabulous place to visit. I bet you did a great job of capturing it. Very handy to have a resource to help you out. Congrats!!
Thanks Alicia and Leah.
