What Does A NASCAR Driver, Army Ranger, and National Guardsman Have In Common? by Donna Michaels

Hello, it’s Donna Michaels, and as you can see, my head is full of heroes! Okay, my head is always full of heroes, but this is just one crazy instance where all three of these heroes’ books will be released inside of one month, and their commonality is probably not what you’d expect.

These releases all deal with veteran suicide.

A tough subject, but veteran suicide is real, and an epidemic, and part of life. A part I wish we could help, but maybe by acknowledging it and talking about it, we can help make some sort of a difference. They say knowledge is power. Let’s put that power to good use. My husband’s unit has had two suicides in the past four years, so it does hit home for me. I ate with these men and their families, and I’ll be honest with you, I’m still in shock. It’s taken me over a year since the last one, but I felt I was now at a place where I could include the subject in my stories.

Two of these releases are part of my Citizen Soldier Series. The heroes are both hurting over the suicide of a National Guardsman that has taken place in the background of the first five books. Greg was the cousin to one of the heroes, Matthew, and he was best friends with the other hero, Keiffer, who is also the one to find the body.

Let me introduce you to these men. First is my NASCAR driver, Matthew “Stone” Bennett, in WINE AND HOT SHOES. Before writing this story, I didn’t know that much about NASCAR, other than I knew one of the books in my Citizen Soldier Series would have a driver as a hero, since the series is set in the Poconos of PA and fairly close to the Pocono Raceway. One of the things I love most about this book is that it’s the heroine who is in the National Guard.

While researching NASCAR and stock car racing, I discovered a few fun facts, including this one that helped me title the book:

Hot Shoe:  1. Driver who has the most past wins among active drivers at a particular track; is the quickest in qualifying, and is favored to win at that track.

WINE AND HOT SHOES
Citizen Solder Series/Book 6/Audrey

This Thanksgiving, Sgt. Audrey McNeil Watson is thankful for wine. Lots and lots of wine. And her closet of hot shoes. Together, they help her deal with the return of her sexy ex-boyfriend, the now famous NASCAR Champion she left after 9/11 to join the National Guard and make a difference. Too bad he still manages to accelerate her pulse and drive her crazy.

Professional stock car racing driver, Matthew “Stone” Bennett returned home to meet with the Wyne brothers to discuss a recent encounter with their estranged brother Keiffer, to face the reality of his cousin’s suicide, and for the wedding of his buddy, Ethan Wyne.

Volunteering to draw the paparazzi away from the happy couple, he and Audrey agree to spend time together with purely platonic intentions. But he soon discovers their old flame never died, as well as old hurts and resentments. Matthew must face the pain of his past in order to sort out his future.

**I just want to note that all of my books, no matter what series they are in, are all written as standalones. You do not need to read any of the others to enjoy the stories.**

----------------------------------

Now on to Keiffer Wyne. This hero is by far my most talked about. I’ve been getting emails from readers for almost two years now. They want the poor guy to have his HEA, and I’m so thrilled to finally make that happen. HER TROUBLED COWBOY releases 12/13/16 and is up for pre-order now! Readers were introduced to his heroine, Caitlin, in book 4 of my Harland County Series, Her Forever Cowboy. She’s the sister to the heroine, and had a cameo—and a fling with Keiffer—in Book 2 of the Citizen Soldier Series, Wyne and Chocolate when Caitlin traveled with his sister to the Poconos for his sister’s wedding. Since then, his buddy has died, and Keiffer has been spiraling out of control. Now, in his story, everything is coming full circle.

Some incidents from the past are not easily forgotten…

For over a year, former National Guardsman Keiffer Wyne left his past in Pennsylvania to start a new life, drifting from ranch to ranch across the southwest. Unrestricted, nomadic, unaccountable—he embraces the new lifestyle, until he’s called upon to watch over his sister Brandy during her husband’s absence. The problem? She’ll be there. The one woman capable of breaking through his barriers and making him feel.

Caitlin Ryan can’t believe who blew into Harland County looking dangerous, hotter, sexier than the time they shared an unforgettable weekend together. She knows he’s still dealing with the death of his buddy and his mind isn’t in a good place, but neither of them are strong enough to fight their undeniable attraction. Keiffer’s troubled and all wrong for her, counting down the days until he leaves. Too bad she never learned to shy away from trouble…

 ---------------------------------

And last, but as they say, not least, is my upcoming release, IN A RANGER’S ARMS. I’m so excited to have my first release with Entangled Publications. This is Book One in The Men of At-Ease Ranch Series, focusing on former Army Ranger buddies who  opened a transition ranch for returning veterans when another of their buddies nearly died by his own hands the year before. Again, although the underlying message is serious, the books are lighthearted and humorous with a ton of heat.

I was honored to have Vonnie read an ARC and give me this wonderful book quote:

“A hot cowboy hero, a clever heroine, former Rangers, and a jealous cow form the cast of a romance so endearing, you’ll want to read it again and again.”
--Vonnie Davis, author of Black Eagle Ops Series

No amount of training could’ve prepared him for her.

Former Army Ranger Stone Mitchum doesn’t have time for sex. Since starting a company with his brother and two buddies, he’s had more important things on his mind. Like transitioning veterans back into society. But when his curvy new tenant falls into his arms—literally—his libido snaps to attention.

Jovy Larson has four weeks to prove she’s worthy of taking over the family business. Her challenge? Sell gluten-free, vegan food—in the middle of cattle country, Texas. It’s a tough task, but not half as tough as fighting her attraction to her sexy, surly landlord.

Before she knows it, Jovy’s tangling sheets with the hot cowboy, stalked by a jealous cow, and strategizing ways to help Stone’s ranch. But by the time her lease runs out and the test is over, she’s faced with a new challenge…competing against Stone’s sense of duty to win his heart.

Donna's Little Helper

The mission, should you choose to accept it: study college student behavior and report back to me.

Hi, it's Donna Michaels and that is the mission I gave my daughter’s cat Franco before we left her dorm last month. This is Jes’ junior year in college and she’s going to rush a sorority this fall/spring, depending on the ‘house’ she is interested in.

So exciting! This works out great for me too, because I’ll be writing a book in an N/A collection with two incredible authors next spring that focuses on three sorority sisters and a mystery at their college. I can hardly wait!

Did I also mention it’ll be first person? New ground for me. I’m excited about the challenge, but need all the help I could get. So, I enlisted Franco’s services to take notes and keep up on the research for me while I make my other deadlines.

Here are a few shots of him hard at work.
Pretending to chill while secretly recording activity in the common area
I'm not sure what he's looking for...and I'm not sure I want to know
Keeping an eye on the parking lot for any suspicious activity
Lulling them in with cuteness. They must've been on to him
Looking at things from a different perspective
I'm not sure why he's inspecting my daughter's finger. It'll be in the report
This is where he told them to get the camera out of his face, they were going to blow his cover

So, as you can see, I’m pretty sure he has a lot to tell me the next time we meet. Jes will fill me in on the rushing and all the steps involved, but Franco…he’s going to have the juicy stuff about college life in general so I get the vibe right. He’s my inside guy.

An author’s life...so exciting! We get to talk to some amazing people...and cats…to get the facts. Just imagine all the good stuff your pets could report...

Hope you have a great September.

Thanks for reading,
~Donna

Hanging Out at RT by Donna Michaels

Hello, it’s Donna Michaels, again, and this month I’m blogging from the Romantic Times Convention in Las Vegas!

There have been some wonderful craft workshops, and reader workshops, and author workshops. I’ve met many wonderful authors!! Sat in on a Q&A with Susan Mallery, HelenKay Dimon, and my idol, Jill Shalvis!

I even got to ask them a question! J “What was the favorite occupation you ever gave to a heroine?” They each said they like to give them something interesting, but they prefer to concentrate more on the whole character and her backstory than just her occupation. Could be why I love their books so much!

~On Thursday, I had the privilege of hosting the SOS Military Tribute with:

This is Brig. Gen. AJ Tata who recanted some very interesting tales and shared his version of a hero: Someone who puts other’s safety before his/her own. A wonderful definition! Oh, and he’s also a Kensington author. Look him up. He was amazing!

~I also participated in the Cowboy Corral with Host(s):
We gave out free books, downloads, and swag. The hour blew past. I was bummed I wasn’t able to visit each table or grab a photo.

~Yesterday, I, along with Susan Stoker, Randi Alexander, Elle James, and Desiree Holt, had the privilege to sponsor a private concert in a suite for country music singer/songwriter, cover model, Jackson Young! We raised $500 with the sale of our Soldiers Are The Best Book Boyfriends T-shirts, which was the ticket into the private concert.

Jackson sang some terrific songs, not-yet released songs, and even did a tribute to the late, great Merle Haggard in a private suite with the Vegas strip as a backdrop. Thank you to all who came!!

~And today, is the day of the giant book fair! I’ll be there signing, along with over 600 other authors. I’ll have HER FATED COWBOY, LOCKE AND LOAD, and WYNE AND DINE, the book that just won 1st Place for Best Contemporary at the BTS eMagazine Red Carpet Reader’s Choice Awards last week!

It would be wonderful to see you today! If not, I’ll also be signing tomorrow at the RT Readers and Writers Roundup!

~Next month, I hope to have some great news to share. Until then, have a wonderful April.

Thanks for reading,
~Donna

Assigned to go undercover as a gun for hire, he’s determined to do whatever it takes to complete the mission, but his restraint is tested when his buddy’s hot sister becomes mistakenly involved.

When her brother disappears, coffee shop owner Gina Daye seeks help from his former teams members only to have the almighty Hawk turn her down. But before she realizes he’s in the middle of an assignment, she’s embroiled in the mission and forced to play along in order to keep her brother safe.
Sequestered together in order to avoid an international incident, the pair face down bullets, the enemy, and even more dangerous—their attraction.

Wyne/Wine and a Giveaway by Donna Michaels

**My Winners are...

Debby  and Jannine!

Congratulations! Sorry for the delay! Wine and Dine is on its way!

Thank you all for commenting. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

*******

Hello everyone, I’m excited! In eight days the third book in my Citizen Soldier Series, WYNE AND SONG releases, and a month later the fourth book in the series WINE AND HER NEW YEAR COWBOY releases in the RING IN A COWBOY boxed set!
This series is special to me because it features National Guard heroes and heroines, and as you know, my husband has been in the National Guard for over 30 years. It’s my honor to portray these brave men and women, and their support on the home front.

I’d like to share some Wyne and Wine and offer a giveaway at the end.

Book 3/Ethan features my single father who surprised me. I usually have pretty much alpha heroes, but Ethan has a little beta going on, too, and I enjoyed every bit of that aspect of him.

WYNE AND SONGCitizen Soldier Series
Book 3/ Ethan
Releasing 11/24/15 Available NOW for Pre-Order!

Single father Ethan Wyne’s trust in women stopped when his cheating wife died while he was deployed. Dating and relationships are in the past. His son is his life now and he’s proud of the stable home he’s created through hard work, determination, and support. But when a family celebration in NYC leads to a moment of weakness with a vivacious beauty, he’s tempted to rethink his reasoning. Especially when she turns up in the Poconos. Can he take a chance again when more than his heart is at stake?
Phoebe Weston’s temporary gig in a summer production in the Poconos is just what the Broadway star needs to keep busy while awaiting a Hollywood screen test. The magic of the show reawakens her passion for the basics, and her frequent encounters with the handsome, single father of a young friend awakens something more.

But Ethan’s made it clear he’s not looking for permanent, and for the first time in her life, Phoebe’s not looking for temporary. Maybe what the jaded father’s locked up, guarded heart needs is a little song.

***********************

When I was asked to be in the RING IN A COWBOY boxed set featuring cowboys set around New Years, I knew I wanted to bring a cowboy from my Harland County Series up to the Poconos and create a Citizen Soldier/Harland County Crossover for the set. I immediately thought of Harper, one of my Texas cowboys, then I chuckled gleefully and rubbed my hands together imagining some fun for the displaced cowboy stuck in the snowy north.

WINE AND A NEW YEAR COWBOY
Citizen Soldier/Harland County Series
Crossover Novella
Book 4/ Lucas

Texas cowboy, Lucas Harper relocates to the Poconos when he’s named guardian of a teenager in the will of a father he didn’t know existed. With a new job, new Guard unit, new house, and a new sister, he’s reached his ‘new’ limit, until he meets his sister’s new boss.
A magnet for Mr. Wrong, pizza shop owner, Evie Martelli makes an early New Year’s resolution to go ‘no male’, but the sexy older brother of her employee puts that resolution to the test. Good thing her brother has a ‘no dating rule’ concerning the guys from his unit.

But, everybody knows rules are meant to be broken, and resolutions rarely last more than a few days…

Plaid for Poppy by Donna Michaels

Sorry this is a little late. Two significant events happened yesterday. The first--we buried my father-in-law. He passed away Saturday morning after his long battle with cancer. Bless him, he was a stubborn man who hung on for his 56th Wedding Anniversary which was Friday, not wanting to ruin that date for my mother-in-law. He did things his way right until the end.

Poppy loved his flannel and plaid shirts and to roll up his jeans, we called his Fonzie pants. That was how he was laid to rest, and on the night of his viewing, me, my husband, and our children all wore plaid for Poppy.

This week has been sad, but we've also been laughing a lot at some wonderful memories. Poppy had a great sense of humor and was practical joker, something his son inherited, which of course, was what attracted me to Michael. I was seventeen when I first started to date my husband, and thanks to Poppy, no matter how old I get, I will always feel young because of the nickname he gave me. Kid. He was such a great story teller, too. I was always amazed by his memory, but most impressed with the way he summarized the boring details with...yadda...yadda...yadda.

My least favorite part of writing is the fluff! Now I know how to handle them. lol I never thought to use...yadda...yadda...yadda. :-) So, you just might see that in my books from now on. I'm sure my publishers wouldn't mind. lol

The second significant event that happened yesterday, was the release of my Mini Movie by the wonderful Jackson Young for HER HEALING COWBOY.

In this story, my hero Jace lost his father to a disease when he was young. His dad was HIV positive from a blood transfusion, and this shaped his life, and made him determined to become a doctor so he could join Doctor's Without Borders to treat, and help spread awareness to families of those afflicted in Africa on how to live with the disease. He's just waiting until his commission runs out with the National Guard, then he'll join DWB and be on his way. lol Nope. He meets, and falls for, the niece of one of his patients, a very giving woman who is only in town temporarily to help run her uncle's ice cream shop while he recovers from surgery.

Jackson did a fantastic job of capturing, both the importance, and playful essence of Her Healing Cowboy in such a short, limited timeframe. And the incorporation of percussion work lent by Tom Larson who has done some amazing efforts in Africa, just ties it all together.

Thank you for letting me pay tribute to Poppy, Jace, and Jackson today.

Thanks for reading,

Pinch me, I must be dreaming...by Donna Michaels

It’s been a remarkable year, so far, and it’s only half over. When I sit and think about all that has taken place the past few months, I can’t help but wonder if I am dreaming.

I barely recovered from hitting the NY Times and USA Today Bestsellers list back in January, (Who am I kidding? That still hasn’t sunk in. It’s just too surreal), then Kathryn Falk personally contacts me to invite me to RT last month—I just…wow. And I got to go up on stage at the welcome party in front of the whole 2k plus contingent with my 11 wonderful cowboy author cohorts to announce the new 12-Alarm Cowboy boxed set spearheaded by Kathryn. As if that wasn’t amazing enough, I got to meet my idol, Jill Shalvis several times, again…just…wow. AmazonEncore Publishing bought one of my books and actually gave me an advance. I’d never received one before. You can bet I copied the check and framed that sucker!!
Next month, I’m receiving 2 awards for HER UNIFORM COWBOY at the Author/Reader CON in New Orleans. (Still in shock, maybe pinch me again…) AND two weeks ago, I learned I have another cowboy up for a possible award this September. HER FOREVER COWBOY just finaled in InD’tale Magazine’s 2015 R.O.N.E Awards for Best Contemporary Cops, Jocks and Cowboys!

Please don’t think I’m writing this post to boast. Absolutely not. I’m writing it to THANK all of those responsible. Don’t think for one second I assume all of that wonderful stuff happened because of me. Nope. It all happened because I have the most amazing, terrific, loyal readers, and the best, fabulous author friends in the world! Thank you all from the bottom of my fluttering heart! <3

The book I have with AmazonEncore is on sale right now for $1.99!

That new 12-Alarm Cowboy boxed set I mentioned is up for Pre-Order and only .99cents! Now’s a great time to get 12 hot, cowboy firefighters before the price goes up when it releases on August 4th. My contribution HER VOLUNTEER COWBOY is the 6 th book in my Harland County Series, and I won’t be releasing it as a single until September. This is a good way to get your copy, along with 11other smokin’ hot cowboys, and all for only .99cents!
Amazon
Barnes & Noble (Nook)
Kobo
iBooks

And I just had a New Release three weeks ago. HER HEALING COWBOY, Book 5 in my Harland County Series is now available in eBook and Print, and has garnered 16 Five Star reviews and 3 Four Stars. A big thank you to all who took the time to leave such wonderful reviews. <3
Holly’s stay in Harland County Texas is limited. She’s only there to help run her uncle’s ice cream business while he recuperates from an operation. Her home is in Colorado. Her life is in Denver. Her dream job is in Denver but won’t be if she doesn’t get back before her leave of absence runs out. Everybody knows this, but apparently her heart and body didn’t get the memo because they spark to life whenever her uncle’s smoking, hot doctor is around. But she’s been burned by one before and is definitely not interested. Much.
Doctor Jace Turner has one goal: Join Doctors Without Borders. Ever since his father was in a car accident and became HIV Positive from a blood transfusion, Jace set his sights on the organization and plans to join, once his contract is up with the Texas National Guard. The last thing he needs is the crazy attraction he feels toward the beauty from Colorado.
The cowboy isn’t looking for a relationship. She isn’t staying. Perfect set up for a fling. What harm could there be?

 As always, thanks for reading,

~Donna

I met my Idol at #RT2015 by Donna Michaels

Howdy!
This has certainly been a great year for me. First, I make the NY Times and USA Today Bestsellers lists in January, and now, I can cross meeting my idol, Jill Shalvis off my bucket list!

I even had the presence of mind to form a coherent sentence, and she was gracious enough to allow me to get a picture taken with her.

And I even took a break yesterday and walked over to Dealey Plaza where JFK was killed. It was a beautiful, peaceful area, and a bit surreal standing on the sidewalk and staring at the X in the middle of the street where he had been killed. Here is a photo I took from near the grassy knoll, complete with another tourist checking out the area.

The week has been a whirlwind of fun and networking. I got to host a fun Cover Model party on Tuesday night, a fun Steampunk party on Thursday night, several wonderful panels, and the best, was on Wednesday, at the Welcome Party, where I was on stage representing the Cowboy 12-Pack with Randi, Becky, Lexi, Paige, Beth, Elle, and Cynthia, where we announced that we have embarked on another boxed set, spearheaded by Katherine Falk. It's called 12 Alarm Cowboys! A boxed set of cowboy firefighters from Texas!!
 Releasing August 4th!

Pre Order for 99 cents!

Keep an eye on my FB page for more photos from RT! And, make sure you're subscribed to my newsletter because I'm collecting swag and books from as many authors as possible and will be giving it away to randomly drawn subscribers!!

As always, thanks for reading!

Uniquely Similar by Donna Michaels

Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else. ~ Margaret Mead

I’m a firm believer that we are all unique, so doesn’t that, in itself, make us similar?

As authors, we have an ‘idea’ that turns into a plot, that turns into a book, regardless of the genre, publisher, or ranking. We are all authors with published books.

As readers, we love to read, doesn’t matter the genre, publisher, or author. We are all readers who enjoy a good book.

And because I enjoy writing contemporary cowboys and military heroes, does not mean I don’t love to write sci-fi or suspense or time travel, because I do. Just like thousands of other authors.

Publishers, editors, and even readers encourage us to write out-side-the box, looking for that unique, fresh voice with a new and different plot. And yet, we are asked, or told, what author we write similar to.

Uniquely similar.

One of my cowboys is being translated into Japanese, and what’s even cooler, is that it’s being hand drawn into a MANGA, which is a graphic novel. I can’t wait! I won’t be able to read it, but I can look at it! Unique, I know, but so are a few other titles from The Wild Rose Press.

Again, I’m uniquely similar.

You know what? I’m quite all right with that label because all of my favorite authors, actors, inspirational figures from history, they all fall into that category as well.

So, go on, tell me what makes you uniquely similar. J

I currently have a cowboy on sale for .99 cents…along with 7 other authors. See? The theme even fits this sale. lol

**Giveaway**

In conjunction with the sale, we’re running a Rafflecopter with the prize of a $50 GC to Amazon or BN!! Here’s the link to enter:

Have a great April, and thanks for reading,

~Donna
