I’M HELLBENT by Vonnie Davis

One of my series—Black Eagle Ops—has a former SEAL as its commander. Zane Quinlan’s ranch in the Hill Country of Texas is the team’s headquarters. In former books, ZQ was a bit of a matchmaker for his former servicemen and women who came to Black Eagle Ranch. Most brought along their snarly attitudes and PTSD. Some their new limbs. All packed their enduring patriotic spirits.

I took a chance writing these books in three point-of-views: the heroine’s, the hero’s, and ZQ’s. Soon I started getting emails from readers. “When would ZQ get his romance and his mother, known as Junebug, the grandchildren she wanted so badly?”

ZQ’s story would have to be special. He’d been married to the military, retired and returned to the ranch when he learned his dad had cancer, and continued running the spread as his former team slowly trickled in for a quiet place to heal.

Desiree Holt was gathering authors for her next twelve Omega Team release for Kindle Worlds. I asked if I could bring my Black Eagle Ops men along. She agreed.

Running boots sounded behind him. “ZQ! Wait up.”
Dammit! Can’t I have a few effingg minutes to myself to process?
JJ grabbed his other hand and took his pulse. “Are you feeling okay? You’re so pale? Athena yelled for me, said you stumbled around and seemed disoriented. That’s not like you. Pulse is rapid. Skin clammy.” He passed ZQ a bottle of water. “Drink.” He glanced around and pointed to the park across the street. “Let’s grab a bench.”
He shook his head and walked on. “Nah. I’m good. Just need some fresh air.”
JJ matched him stride for stride. “You know, ZQ, you can’t bullshit an old bullshitter. Do you know how many times I’ve told people I was fine when I was a heartbeat away from ripping things apart? I’m getting a strong vibe you’re hanging on by a thread. What’s wrong?” JJ grabbed his commander’s elbow and marched him across the street to the quiet park.
“I’ve just been hit with some unexpected news and need a break from everyone to think.” Maybe JJ would take the hint and go away.
“Good thing I’m not everyone, ZQ. I have secrets only you know. So I’m willing to listen to yours and keep them to myself. That’s the kind of brothers we are, man. Salt and pepper.”
“Not in the mood for sharing. Not yet.” Why would Rose name her kid after the name I used with her? Is her child mine? He did some quick math calculations.  “Did you hear me? Go back to Grey’s place.”
“Not happening. You need someone to talk to. What made you go pale? Athena said you scared the crap outta her. I get the feeling it takes a lot to rattle that woman.”
What the hell. He and JJ had talked about a lot of stuff during the time he’d been at the ranch. After gulping a long drink of water, he leaned back on the bench and took a deep breath. “I’m a sexual Dominant.”
“Yeah, the team’s already figured that much out.”
“My enjoyment of a little kink is none of the team’s business. Once I was assigned to SEAL Team Five, based out of Coronado, I joined a BDSM club there. I mostly did scenes, always keeping my eye out for a favorite. You know, someone whose kink matched mine.” ZQ smiled and hitched a shoulder.
“Then one night, I met Rose. We meshed like ice cream and chocolate syrup. Because of my rank and level of security I held, I’d bastardized my last name. Everyone at the club knew me simply as Quinn. Looks like Rose did the same with her last name.”
JJ placed his elbows on his spread thighs and hung his head. “Don’t tell me. Ivy Rosemoor is your Rose? Hell, man, are you gonna be able to keep your mind focused on the mission?”
“I’ll have to to bring her back.” He tipped the bottle to his mouth and guzzled some more.
“Let me check your pulse again.” JJ pressed two fingers against ZQ’s neck. “It’s not as rapid. What broke you two up?”
“She knew I was a SEAL. I’d told her that much, but not that I was a team commander. You know how that shit works, the higher I rose in rank, the more confidential information I was privy to. I didn’t want to leave my security clearance open or vulnerable. Initially she told me she was a college student, but I thought she was a little old for that.” He shrugged. “I just figured we both had details we needed to keep private.
“Later she told me she was a law student, preparing to take her bar exams. She told me in confidence. Some people worry about being blackmailed because of their sexual lifestyle. Don’t know if it’s ever happenes, but—”
ZQ glanced away and exhaled a long breath. “Everything was great between us. Then orders came for Team Five to go to Afghanistan to take out a group of Taliban hiding in the mountains of Hindu Kush. I had a separate phone I used only for Rose. I gave her one for me. This kept our relationship totally separate from our public lives. We liked being in our own private cocoon.
“I texted her that my job was taking me away for a while and I didn’t know when I’d be back. I told her to always remember how much she meant to me. Then I texted her after our arrival and told her we were in the back half-acre of hell, setting up camp. I asked her if she missed me and to send me a selfie.”
ZQ stretched his long legs and took a deep breath. “Eager for her reply, I put the phone on a pile of rocks near our command tent where we had intermittent wireless Internet. I turned and saw Two Packs needed help digging a hole for the latrine.” He closed his eyes hoping to block out the memory. A futile exercise. ZQ had run to help because having a shitter was a necessity. A volley of gunfire had gone off. He dove into the hole and his buddy’s lifeless body had fallen on top of him.
“We used to tell Two Packs his smoking would kill him,” JJ spoke with reverence. “Instead it was a group of Taliban snipers.”
ZQ shook off the memory of lifting his man’s body out of the way so he could return fire. It was a tense ten minutes that seemed short in one way and eternal in another. He and two of his men had received minor wounds.
“Yeah, the bastards shot up my phone, too. The trouble with speed dial is you never memorize the person’s phone number. My connection to Rose was gone.”

ELITE PROTECTOR
Brotherhood Protectors KW
(Connected to the Dangerous Curves Series)

Lured to the mountains of Montana under the assumption her uncle and her godfather recommended her as a bodyguard for Brotherhood Protectors—an agency started by one of their former SEALs—Kat Crawford, former NIO, discovers too late, she’s really there as a client.

Former DEVGRU SEAL, Brogan “Sonic” O’Neal, dropped his packet to return to Montana to take over his grandfather’s woodshop and care for the dying man. A deathbed promise to “not” return to the teams sentences him to life without the adrenaline rush he craves, until an old SEAL buddy hires him as a part time bodyguard for Brotherhood Protectors.

A request to protect the niece of a former CO lands Brogan his first assignment, but it could be his last. Keeping objective is impossible. He’s watched the woman grow up through pictures in the commander’s office. Now she’s at Brogan’s cabin. Their chemistry is off the charts. And giving into their attraction is as inevitable as a Montana sunrise.

But when Kat suggests the Brotherhood uses her as bait to end the threats once and for all, Brogan realizes his feelings for the woman run deep. Can he resist the alpha need to protect her? If he does, will she survive? If he doesn’t, will their relationship?

Wyne/Wine and a Giveaway by Donna Michaels

**My Winners are...

Debby  and Jannine!

Congratulations! Sorry for the delay! Wine and Dine is on its way!

Thank you all for commenting. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

*******

Hello everyone, I’m excited! In eight days the third book in my Citizen Soldier Series, WYNE AND SONG releases, and a month later the fourth book in the series WINE AND HER NEW YEAR COWBOY releases in the RING IN A COWBOY boxed set!
This series is special to me because it features National Guard heroes and heroines, and as you know, my husband has been in the National Guard for over 30 years. It’s my honor to portray these brave men and women, and their support on the home front.

I’d like to share some Wyne and Wine and offer a giveaway at the end.

Book 3/Ethan features my single father who surprised me. I usually have pretty much alpha heroes, but Ethan has a little beta going on, too, and I enjoyed every bit of that aspect of him.

WYNE AND SONGCitizen Soldier Series
Book 3/ Ethan
Releasing 11/24/15 Available NOW for Pre-Order!

Single father Ethan Wyne’s trust in women stopped when his cheating wife died while he was deployed. Dating and relationships are in the past. His son is his life now and he’s proud of the stable home he’s created through hard work, determination, and support. But when a family celebration in NYC leads to a moment of weakness with a vivacious beauty, he’s tempted to rethink his reasoning. Especially when she turns up in the Poconos. Can he take a chance again when more than his heart is at stake?
Phoebe Weston’s temporary gig in a summer production in the Poconos is just what the Broadway star needs to keep busy while awaiting a Hollywood screen test. The magic of the show reawakens her passion for the basics, and her frequent encounters with the handsome, single father of a young friend awakens something more.

But Ethan’s made it clear he’s not looking for permanent, and for the first time in her life, Phoebe’s not looking for temporary. Maybe what the jaded father’s locked up, guarded heart needs is a little song.

***********************

When I was asked to be in the RING IN A COWBOY boxed set featuring cowboys set around New Years, I knew I wanted to bring a cowboy from my Harland County Series up to the Poconos and create a Citizen Soldier/Harland County Crossover for the set. I immediately thought of Harper, one of my Texas cowboys, then I chuckled gleefully and rubbed my hands together imagining some fun for the displaced cowboy stuck in the snowy north.

WINE AND A NEW YEAR COWBOY
Citizen Soldier/Harland County Series
Crossover Novella
Book 4/ Lucas

Texas cowboy, Lucas Harper relocates to the Poconos when he’s named guardian of a teenager in the will of a father he didn’t know existed. With a new job, new Guard unit, new house, and a new sister, he’s reached his ‘new’ limit, until he meets his sister’s new boss.
A magnet for Mr. Wrong, pizza shop owner, Evie Martelli makes an early New Year’s resolution to go ‘no male’, but the sexy older brother of her employee puts that resolution to the test. Good thing her brother has a ‘no dating rule’ concerning the guys from his unit.

But, everybody knows rules are meant to be broken, and resolutions rarely last more than a few days…

Sometimes New Opportunities Open the Door for More by Donna Michaels

It’s funny how surprises happen when you least expect them, and how one opportunity can roll into more. And not just in personal life. My writing life has been crazy busy since hitting the ‘lists’ this past February, which all started when I was given the opportunity to join 11 wonderful western authors in the Cowboy 12-Pack. I’ve been going from one deadline to another, with several conferences in between.

The reason I was at RT in Dallas this past May, was because the boxed set had made the lists and caught the attention of Kathryn Falk. She asked us all to attend and consider writing another one. At the welcome breakfast, she called us up on stage to announce our next boxed set, the 12-Alarm Cowboy Firefighter set.

Bless the readers, they were thrilled, and it showed in preorders and sales when we released August 4th, because we just hit the NYT Bestseller's list at #13, and the USA Today Bestseller’s list at #31 this past week!

One opportunity, led to another, which led to another. I’m still happy dancing! J And now, it’s leading to our 3rd boxed set of cowboy novellas, this time they will be ‘law’ themed and due out in the spring of 2016!
Then, this past June in Las Vegas at the Romance Novel Convention, I was finishing up writing that cowboy/firefighter novella—Her Volunteer Cowboy—when the wonderful Cat Johnson messaged me to ask if I’d be interested in writing a SEAL novella for her Hot SEALs Kindle Worlds!!
Holy smokes! Not only was I honored, I was also thrilled because this was a fantastic way for me to release my military romantic suspense series—Dangerous Curves.
I had the first book nearly finished and sitting on my hard drive for two years. All I had to do was write a novella that connected that book to Hot SEALs KW. Of course I said yes! The incredible opportunity to write in Cat’s world, also gave me the opportunity to launch my new series, and expose my novella, along with the pre-order of the story sitting on my hard drive, to readers of that genre.
Again, one opportunity lead to another.
Knight’s SEAL/Dangerous Curves Book 1/Hot SEALs KW
Crossover Novella
Navy SEAL Sam ‘Excel’ Gentry barely has time to consider his buddy’s job offer to join Guardian Angel Protection Service when a commander from their past, with his own D.C. based agency, asks for help. Owing his life to former Commander Jameson Knight, Sam is eager to help retrieve a mutual friend from a dangerous cartel, until he learns the operative assisting him is Knight’s oldest daughter, Lisa—Sam’s former lover.
Elisabeth Knight has waited over eight months to get into the field, and just her luck, her first mission hits close to home in more ways than one.  Not only does it involve rescuing her friend, a former NIO like herself, but her father assigns one of his former SEALs to assist—the one she’d given her body and heart to five years ago. Sam had walked away when he’d realized who her father was, and she let him, not wanting to see the sexy man shot, or worse, assigned to Antarctica…permanently. Completing their current mission isn’t the issue, the danger lies in their inability to fight their resurrected attraction and keeping that failure from her father

LOCKE and Load/Dangerous Curves Book 2
Former Naval Intelligence Officer Lt. Nicole Locke’s assignment to assist in a murder investigation, puts her face-to-face with the only man she ever loved—the man she was forced to jilt in order to save his life.
Det. Cage Burnett vows to do whatever it takes to bring down his partner’s killer, even work with the woman who crushed his heart four years earlier when she left him for another man. The dangerous investigation rekindles their desire, but when someone from Nikki’s past reappears and threatens Cage’s future, once again, Locke is loaded with determination to keep the man she loves alive.

 There's more.

At the end of July, I attended the Author/Reader Con in New Orleans, sat on a suspense panel, due to my upcoming SEAL story, hosted a Cowboy party because of the 12-Alarm boxed set, and was a finalist in the BTS eMagazine Red Carpet Book Awards because of my contribution to the original Cowboy 12-Pack.
See? Life is full of opportunities and surprises. J The biggest surprise being the three Awards I took home that weekend:
Her Uniform Cowboy won 1st Place for Best Romance & 2nd Place for Best Book of the Year!

And Her Forever Cowboy surprised me with Honorable Mention for Best Romance! I had no idea it was even close!
~~*~~*~~*~~
Please let me take this opportunity to thank my readers for helping to make this year a great one for me and my books. Without you, none of those would’ve happened, and I am truly grateful. <3

Thanks for reading,
~Donna

Fall in Love with a National Guardsman by Donna Michaels

I did. ☺

My husband is full time National Guard and the inspiration behind my hero in my upcoming release WYNE AND DINE. He and his unit have inspired me to write the Citizen Soldier Series set in the Poconos of PA (my back yard) where fall is so dang pretty! This series is a spin-off from my cowboy series, so don't fret, you'll still get some cowboys and cowboy-isms. These servicemen are rough and tough and tortured and sweet and passionate and deserve an HEA.

I've met many men and women in the National Guard over the past thirty years, and I've noticed in the publishing world that not too many books with military heroes and heroines are National Guardsmen. They're Marines, SEALs, Rangers...etc., which are wonderful, heck, I've written books featuring each of those great branches of service, but I felt it was time to showcase the guard. There will even be some heroines in this series that are part time soldiers. It doesn't take the threat of world domination to send these men and women into action. They are here for us when disaster strikes on the homefront. My husband has been state activated during floods, blizzards, hurricanes, ice storms, presidential inaugurations, and yes, some units where activated to help out in New York on that fateful day.

The Guard was originally created to guard our homeland. They were not supposed to be deployed, but times have changed, and so have the world's needs. These men and women are there when their community or the world falls to pieces, or to the wayside or even seems like it's falling apart. So, I figure it's time we fall in love with them. ♥

The Wyne brothers were first introduced in Book 3 HER UNIFORM COWBOY in my Harland County Series. They are the heroine Brandi's brothers, and this first book will feature the wedding between Brandi and Kade up at the Pocono resort she'd helped design for her brothers to run. Look out, Pennsylvania, the cowboys are coming up north for a visit. :-)

Here's the unedited blurb:

Sweet, reliable Lea Gablonski has a dream. Two dreams. To work at a museum in NYC, and to gain other-than-sisterly attention from her best friend’s brother. So far, she’s 0 for 0. With her MA in History just a wall decoration at her family’s diner where she’s working while her dad recovers from surgery, she enjoys her encounters with the sexiest man alive—even though he would sooner pat her on the head than take her to bed.

Military born and bred, Btn. S4 Sgt. Benjamin Wyne thrives on order and control in his fulltime career in the PA National Guard and in his personal life. But when he’s forced to ask his sister’s best friend—his childhood sweetheart’s younger sister—to pose as his girlfriend to thwart unwanted advances from his boss’ wife, his world turns chaotic. Lea is full of life and energy and tastes so damn good he’s addicted. And when the attraction takes on a new level at his sister’s wedding, his carefully guarded heart begins to thaw.

He’s seen many relationships go wrong in the military. If he takes a chance on Lea and gives up control, will she be like her sister and leave him for a career in the big city? But if he doesn’t take a chance, will the best damn thing to ever enter his life become history?

**♥**

I'm shooting for a September 22nd release, and hope I do these men and women justice. They are human, with normal lives and jobs, but when they get the call they will put their lives on hold and on the line for you and your family.

Here's the link to my website where you'll find more about the buy:

Have you ever been up to the Poconos of PA? It's a year-round playground for outdoor activities. In the series, the Wyne brothers own and run a resort. ☺

Thanks for reading,

~Donna

Rebel Without A Genre By Donna Michaels

Yep, you guessed it. I’m the rebel.

In the writing world, branding is a huge way to get recognized and to gain a following. I should know. It happened to me without even trying. See, I write romaginative fiction, romance mixed with comedy, contemporary, suspense, sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal, adventure, time travel. I love to read variety and write variety. My books range from short to epic, sweet to very hot, and I’ve even written a story in first person. Variety. It is the spice in my writing life.
But something happened almost two years ago. The Wild Rose Press released my contribution to their Honky Tonk Hearts Series, COWBOY-SEXY.
Amazon offered Finn for free for four days. This was all new to all of us. I made up promo, and advertised on Facebook and all social media I could think of, plus I handed out cards to anyone locally who would take one. lol The gals at the annual Vampire Diaries Party ( or as I like to call it-VD Party) were given special promo and, bless them, they all promised to download my free book and tell a friend.
It worked. I had thousands of downloads. Who knew cowboys were so hot?
I do now. Those thousands of free downloads somehow got the book into Amazon emails and I actually sold a good chunk. Good enough to generate a royalty check that could pay for more than lunch. Yeehaw! It also generated fan mail and readers wanting more. This got me thinking. Cowboys sell. I love cowboys. I have more cowboys. I’m going to turn those cowboys in to a series and see if that makes the readers happy. It did, and does. My Harland County Series is an Amazon Best Seller. With four books out so far, I have plans for four more, and I already have another cowboy series talking in my head.
But I told them to simmer down, especially since the contemporary military series I put on hold to wrangle those Harland cowboys was starting to chant really loud. I was getting antsy. Variety. I needed to mix things up or I knew I’d start twitching. Probably develop an eye tick, too. So my cowboy heroes and military heroes starting talking and negotiating. Here’s what they came up with:
They’re sharing custody of me.
I get to write a Harland County spinoff series that ties the National Guardsmen from PA to my Texas cowboys. There will be characters crossing over from both series. In fact, the hero and heroine in cowboy book #3 will be getting married in the first book in the Citizen Soldier Series.
Brilliant. I’m happy. They’re happy. Now, I just hope my readers will be happy. The PA Guardsman aren’t exactly the quintessential cowboys, but they are outdoorsman. They own a resort in the Pocono mountains, so there’s hiking, fishing, boating, white-water rafting, skiing, horseback riding. Those men are no slackers. And they have great bodies to prove it. They may not wear cowboy boots, but they do wear boots. Combat boots.
As you've probably guessed, even though I write several genres, I’m mostly known for my cowboys. But that’s okay. I love writing them. I’m just not going to write them exclusively. That’s the rebel in me. Guess you could say the rebel made me do it. J
So, if you see me at a convention you’ll find two boots on my table, but they don’t match. One is a cowboy boot and the other is a combat boot. Too bad they didn’t make a suspense boot, or a sci-fi boot, or a paranormal boot…
What are your thoughts on branding and writing? I’d love to hear your input. Especially since my first book in the new series isn’t out until next month. I’ve no idea if it’ll bomb, or if my readers will embrace the change and go with the flow. I sure hope so. I really don’t want to twitch. And that eye tick thing doesn’t sound very fun.
My fourth Harland County book, Her Forever Cowboy is up for Book of the Month over at SSLY!

If you've read Kevin's story and would like to vote, I'd sure appreciate it. Click HERE. Thank you! I'll love you forever and back!

Pssst! Speaking of conventions, I’m in New Orleans right now...TODAY, this very minute! at the Author Reader Con at the Marriott. If you’re in the neighborhood, I hope you’ll stop by for the book fair today, it’s 2pm-6pm. You can’t miss me. Just look for the boots!
