Old habits die hard, I guess

I am continuing my writing "experiment" by writing dialog then going back and filling in action and description. So that's new for me, in some ways.

But I've reverted to having my chapters be X number of words (approximately). I am so much more comfortable having an arc for each chapter and that usually ends up taking just about the same amount of words for each one.

As always, my characters are taking on a new life than that I planned on, which is always intriguing. I have even found a way to allude to my other time travel series with these characters, and have these characters reference some of the characters from my mysteries. Funny how that works out, isn't it?

I took a break this past weekend for some travel but I always get a lot of dictation done in the car as I drive, so I think I'll be able to zip through several more chapters  soon. Summer is winding down and so is my gardening, so I should be able to devote some time to writing -- fingers, don't fail me now!

Sounds like you're busy, as usual, JL. I also shoot for a rough chapter word count of 3000 to 3500 words. It bugs my orderly soul when one goes long. LOL I love sneaking in cross-over characters from a different series. In Wilde Horses, I used a country music star I created for our ROP Christmas stories a couple of years back. I figured, why not!!

Dictation! Now why haven't I tried that? You are one prolific writer, JL and I want to grow up just like you some day. You and Vonnie have brains on fire...you are sooo lucky!

I often wish I had an orderly mind like that! Or maybe the word should be disciplined. I don't even think about how I'm putting the words together - dialogue, description, whatever. It all just comes out! (I usually count myself lucky to get any words written, much less in a certain order or pattern! LOL!) I'm awed! Good luck with your continued experiment!

I "see" my stories like movies, so my first draft reads more like a script--dialogue and stage directions. Then I go back and layer descriptions and emotions. It works for me. Probably doesn't work for many of you. I'm amazed at your productivity, JL. Keep it up. :)

Sounds like the method is working for you, JL, but I've tried and it doesn't work for me. I have also been wanting to try dictation while driving, but I'm not sure what kind of recorder is best. I'll have to check into it. I love that you figured out a way for your characters to cross over!
