Thanksgiving at my house by Barbara Edward

Thanksgiving at my house this year.

Most of my family last summer
My husband and I are eating at home. Alone.

As you know, my husband and I have a large family. All our children are married with children of their own. So where are the multiple invitations to various houses? We didn’t get even one this year.

Don’t get me wrong. I really tried not to be hurt. After all, I knew years ago my daughters-in-law would want to spend holidays with their families and I tried to be understanding. One or the other would say, hey, come over here. We’re having turkey with so-n-so, but there’s room for two more.

I'll admit It made me itch to be the the add-on.

His family? Hey, what can I say? His daughters host his ex-wife and her husband every holiday. And they are uncomfortable with us there. To be honest, I was, too. I gave a sigh of relief we’re not invited, but his feelings are hurt that neither his two sons or two daughters included him.

So we’re planning a festive meal together. Cornish game hens since even a small turkey is too much, brussels sprouts, corn bread, baked potatoes, fresh-made cranberry sauce, cranberry bread,

We’ll overeat and sleep through the football games.

We’ll take the dog for a walk if its nice. Or snowing.

I’ll Thank God for my family and pray for every good thing to be theirs. I’ll include my husband's family since I do like theI

I’ll exchange smiles with my husband and Thank God that he survived his bladder cancer last winter.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

Take an afternoon and read my Christmas novella to get in the mood.

Ellen Carter deeply grieves for her husband Dan, but at least she still has Dixie, her beloved Malinois. However, soon Dixie leaves her too. But the faithful dog cannot rest easy in heaven while her mistress is unhappy. Dixie pleads with the Archangel Michael to let her send help, and intercedes for Ellen in the only way she can. But will Ellen get the message, and more importantly, will she accept Dixie's gift?

Sexy newcomer Michael Burke can barely take enough time from his successful restaurant for a decent night's sleep, let alone romance. Still, he is intrigued by the beautiful widow and can't resist entering her shop. Sparks fly, and when Ellen has an accident in a snowstorm, he comes to her rescue. Trapped by a blizzard and aided by Dixie's Gift, Ellen and Michael find more than shelter--they find love.

This is the time of year when family politics can be especially hurtful. Sorry you're sad. Dinner for two can be special. Enjoy each other and the day together. Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm sorry, Barbara. I can imagine how hurtful that must be. It seems like every year when the holidays roll around, there is some kind of drama going on in our family, where one family member doesn't want to be around someone else. It's stressful. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful, quiet day, and yes, thank God your husband survived the cancer. You do have something very important to be thankful for this year. Hugs and Happy Thanksgiving!

That's our plan.
Have a wonderul holiday.

Hi Alicia,
I hoped to share my thankfulness for his health more than my upset.
Having him with me is the best day anytime.

Barbara, my husband and I are in Sedona, enjoying the red mountains. We'll probably go out to dinner on Thanksgiving, and I look forward to that. I'm like you...I like a big gathering, so we save our money and travel time for the summer when the whole family can get together somewhere in the U.S. Traveling during the holidays is usually frustrating/expensive, anyway. Point is, Thanksgiving and Christmas are usually quiet, just my husband and me. I'm glad we've got each other, too! Cornish game hen...yum!

A special "just the two of you" Thanksgiving sounds like the perfect way to celebrate your husband's recovery this year. I've never enjoyed being the "add-on" either, no matter how much I'm assured so-and-so would love to have us. And who needs the stress of exes at the table! Wishing you a truly joyous time together.

I know you're thankful you have hubby and he came through the cancer. In my experience, so many people have adult children that just don't get it. They have no idea when they're causing hurt. I don't think they'll know until their children are grown. Enjoy a quiet Thanksgiving. Ours will be a bit tense as I pray no politics come up. My feelings are still raw and there are those in my family who don't feel like I do.

Hi Rolynn
Sedona? That's one of the places on my bucket list. Have a happy Holiday

Hi Leah,
It will be perfect. My husband is a wonderful man and I am so glad he is recovering.
Happy holiday to you and yours.

Hi Brenda,
Since the feast is at your house, put a sign saying no politics, please.
It might not work, but it might. I did that eight years ago and it did help since other people reminded the speakers of the rule.
Good luck and have a wonderful holiday.

You do have much to be thankful for, Barb. Since Thanksgiving is usually a family holiday, I'm sad for you.

Enjoy your day with your husband, Barb, and maybe plan a get-together with your kids over the weekend instead. Holidays and expectations add a layer of stress none of us need!

Hi Diane,
since posting this, I've found that we're not really alone. Not with suchwonderful friends. Happy thanksgiving!

Hi Jannine,
We'll plan something when we get back from Florida.
By then I'll be more hospitable.
