Love the mountains, hate the heat |
I'm talking about moving into an RV in the dead of summer, during monsoon season, in a basin which is surrounded by mountains. It's sort of desert. Not ugly desert, but still desert. That means hot. RV's like ours are not meant for extreme temperature comfort.
We ordered a portable evap cooler. Sent it back the second day. It was nothing more than an expensive fan. We have another on order for twice as much money, but supposedly more efficient. We'll see. Today, it got to 92 degrees in the RV with the AC and two fans running all day. Sure hope the new cooler works. At least, because we're not city, the desert does cool down by about 30 degrees once the sun goes behind the mountain.
Happy when the sun goes down |
Maybe I should market my invention with instructions to just add cold water!

You made me laugh this morning, Brenda. Thank you. Love your invention. Sounds marketable to me. We're in the 90s here in Michigan the past couple of weeks and I hardly even stick my head outside. Love your view of the mountains.
Meant to add a PS. We're coming to AZ in our RV soon - in the winter. ;-)
We don't usually have that intense heat for so long, but this month is an exception and I'm checking to see what I can wear in the shower. The ice packs sound good too.
I have to say, my vision of your cooling off method...you won't make the fashion mags. But who cares...you're a cool chick. Have fun on your road trip with your Mom...probably the coolest place to be...in a car with the AC cranked up!
Oh Brenda...you are far braver than I! I would have been out of there to a local hotel by then. I don't tolerate extreme heat, or cold. Yeah...I would have been a goner in pioneer days. Like Margo, I venture outside only when forced. (Right now where I live in southeastern Virginia, my phone says it's 87 degrees but feels like 104 in the humidity. Yuck.) Hope you're having a great trip with your mom! (Rolynn beat me to the "cool" puns!) :-)
It's like when we were kids and hosed off then sat in a lawn chair. Way to get creative! BTW, did you forget that RV has wheels? Maybe you should head north for the rest of the summer!
The ice packs around your ankles are a stroke of genius! I'd have one on my head. I bet you can't wait to get to Colorado to see the kids. Hope it's cool there when you arrive.
You brave, tolerant woman. This ol' chick is so spoiled that a couple of degrees out of my comfort zone puts me in grumpy mode. I don't handle a lot of heat well. Calvin teases me that I better change my ways before I die. (smarty)
I remember once when we lived in an apartment that was in an old converted hotel (circa the 1920s). No air conditioning and we were on the 8th floor. We used to take our sheet at night, get it wet in the shower, wring it out, then lay it over us with a fan blowing on us. Very comfortable until morning. Then we'd head out to air-conditioned offices for the day and movies at night. That was one long July, as I remember....
Brenda, the image of you "cooling off" gave me a good laugh. Ingenious. If possible, I'd probably head to the mountains, too. Anywhere cooler than the AZ desert. Best wishes.
