Embrace your E-READER by Kat de Falla

Please join me in welcoming today's guest, Kat de Falla.

When I got the email that said The Wild Rose Press was picking up The Seer’s Lover, the same thing flashed in my mind that I imagine flashes in the mind of many a new author: “I can’t wait to hold my baby in my hands!”

The crisp new pages, the smell of a new book, flipping through the pages and seeing my own name IN PRINT!

As The Wild Rose Press does produce print books for certain word counts…I was in! Of course, the ebook was available first and I downloaded it the moment it was live on Amazon.

I quickly ordered ten of my babies in the mail…and waited…and waited. Where were they? Finally, weeks later, my neighbor came over with a box and said, “Are these yours? Because we’ve never ordered ten of the same book.”

Arrgh! Actually, it was a bit anticlimactic. My babies had been sitting on their front porch, then tossed aside INSIDE a house across the street for days!

I began to wonder at my marveling over my name in print. Was I more excited the book was available, or the ebook?

The truth is…shh!...I love the ebook. I had tons of downloads during my Kindle Free Days putting my ebook in the hands of people who might otherwise not give it a chance.

Then the real bummer. My husband and I love the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but every time we drive through, we see the decimation of the logging companies. I won’t show pictures or videos…you’ve seen it, and it’s depressing.

Here are the stats (from ePublishers weekly 9/28/09):
In the USA in one year, 2 billion books are produced. To get the paper for these books requires consuming 32 million trees. We can estimate that one tree yields enough paper for 62.5 books…The 200 million ebooks downloaded saved three million and two hundred thousand (3,200,000) trees.”

Okay, that’s pretty staggering. I’m not saying to abandon our beloved print books. We all have them and have lots we could never part with, but embrace your ereader!

Initially, I was sad that my book wouldn’t be prominently displayed in Barnes and Noble. But now, I realize the POD (print-on-demand) that The Wild Rose Press uses, ensures that only people who REALLY want a print copy of my book, get one.

If you’re feeling green…go splurge on an ebook and save the print books for those favorites you can’t live without!

Read on!

Her search for the truth leads her to Lucas Rojas, a seer of angels and demons who walk the earth shrouded from normal human eyes.  He's hidden his gift for years and refuses to endanger Calise by sharing it with her.

In the sultry Costa Rican Jungles, their worlds collide.  As their passion and desire ignite, so does the ancient war between demons and seers.  Will their combined efforts be enough to save themselves and the entire human world, or will their new found love be their downfall?

I was dubious about the joys of e-reading, Kat, until I turned on my first Kindle and downloaded that first book like magic onto the device! Then I got the deluxe cover with the built-in reading light and I was set! The only thing I don't like about it is that it's cumbersome to go back to a section (like if I don't remember something). It's much easier to flip back through the pages of a real book. And you're right that the new POD technology is so much more efficient, and less wasteful. Maybe some day we won't see giant bins of brand-new bargain books! Great post. :-)

I meant to add, wishing you much success with "The Seer's Lover." The cover is fantastic!

I agree, print books are nice to hold in your hands, but they are more just an author perk. You have to sell a TON to really make any money. And, even if you did see your book on the shelf in Barnes and Noble, it wouldn't be there but a month or so, then it would be taken down to make room for other books. I love that Wild Rose Press offers POD, but the way to go now is ebook!!!

Congrats on The Seer's Lover. I actually own it, now I need to find time to read it. :)

Leah, why can't you flip back through your Kindle pages like you do a print book?

Leah, I find that if I highlight things on my kindle while I'm reading, that is the best way to go back and find it. If you click in the upper right hand corner of some of the devices, you can even create a bookmark. Thanks for the comments Leah and Alicia - it is much appreciated!

I honestly like print better but am down with the "greenness" of ebooks. Funny, though, my grandma (98) asks if any new book I have coming out is going to be a "real" book. To her, it isn't real if it isn't in print. I imagine lots of older people feel that way. Best of luck with sales--in all formats!

Thanks Jannine. I felt the same way. I needed to hold my book for the first time to make it "real". And my husband won't throw away ANY books we have. I'm always saying, "I will never open my Chemistry book from college again!" But he insists that if the world gets topsy turvy, print books will be very important. I do agree with that...time to build a library!

Since I started uploading my reference books to my kindle, I've joined the green movement. I do love books, but plan to keep only a few in my library.
I did purchase my own to keep on my shelf. I take pleasure in looking it them.

Hey Kat. My husband is from the UP of Michigan. It is a beautiful place, and I agree about the logging. It was a thrill to hold my first print book in my hands, but now I'm SLOWLY coming to realize the value of e-books both for authors and readers. Best of luck with your new release!

Hi Barb! It is fun to have a few copies of your own books always on hand. Thanks for stopping by :)

Margo, Ahh...the UP is my favorite place on earth. So beautiful. Thanks for the wish of luck - enjoy your ebooks. They sure do make taking a library with you on vacation easy :)
