Month of #Love #99cents Sale (No #Piracy) by Brenda Whiteside

Following on the heels of Andrea's Post yesterday, the illegal distribution of someone else's creative endeavor drives me bananas. Those who steal for profit should be prosecuted or at the very least shut down. If an author wants to give away her books for free, that should be her choice.

But there's another side to this, and I doubt there's anything that can be done about it. Art, in any form, has long been considered a product of love not profit. No one would think the work and material and time that goes into making an item such as a light bulb is born from love or that the end product should be offered up for all of society to enjoy for free. For some reason, creativity, in any form is viewed differently. Not to say people do not want to put out big bucks for a Van Gogh or a first edition of Alice in Wonderland. Eventually, creations are valued. Unfortunately, I think the Internet is the biggest reason there is a free for all attitude on music and books today.

The Internet has introduced millions to what they might not otherwise know. It enriches. Yet, it also takes away. What do you think? Can I blame the Internet?

I'm offering up two ALMOST FREE reads. Books three and four of my Love and Murder Series are on sale this month.

A LEGACY OF LOVE AND MURDER

The Young, the Elderly, and #InDScribe2017 by Brenda Whiteside

The day is half gone in some time zones, and I'm just getting this post up. Even though I have a daily planner, some days I don't have time for much except what is thrown at me. Finding the time to look at my planner never happens. We've all been there.

I arrived back at the Ranch last night after a week in Prescott. Half the week I was granddaughter tending, which I love, but she's all consuming. The world revolves around a four year old, at least in Nana's mind. After three days with her, exhaustion sets in. The other half of the week, I kept my mom
company while my sister and brother-in-law got a few days break. Mom is 86 and in perfect health, but refuses to spend a night alone. I understand her concerns and don't mind spending time with her. But she is as consuming of my energy as my granddaughter.

In the middle of that, we had to go down to Phoenix for the funeral of a very dear man. He's been our friend for thirty-eight years. The service was beautiful, but emotionally draining.

With all of this, I'm supposed to be getting ready for the InD'Scribe Conference which I am driving to on Thursday. Fellow Rose, J L Wilson, will be flying into the Phoenix airport. I'll pick her up and we'll head out on a road trip. California here we come. What to wear? What to take? Wine is the only thing on my list at this point.

The Power of Love and Murder is a finalist for a RONE Award to be announced at the conference. Wish me luck!

READERS RULE! by Brenda Whiteside

In October, I’m attending the InD’Scribe Conference in Burbank, California for the first time. I’m a touch…hmmm…nervous, no…anxious, no…I’m not sure what. Maybe a little of both. This is a conference to recognize and introduce authors who are published through small houses or self-published to readers. This should be a lot of fun. I love to meet readers.

Okay, we’re all readers, yet readers who don’t write are the most fun to meet. Not that I don’t like meeting reader-authors, but someone who already writes isn’t mystified by the whole process. Readers give us a chance to talk about our creative process, brag about our stories, and introduce them to our characters who are real enough to us. I’m not an introvert so I enjoy the interaction.

My trepidation comes with the hype on this conference, second only to the academy awards. There’s the award ceremony when the RONE Award winners will be announced (of which I am a finalist). Evening gowns are a welcomed mode of dress. (I don’t even own a dress…unless you count a couple of bridesmaid dresses that have hung in the back of my closet for a few years) One night, there is a costume ball and the theme is medieval. I am just not a dress-up kind of person. I don’t even do Halloween. Then there is a Rave Table Luncheon. This is an extra cost where an author buys a special table to host for their fans. I can only picture a disastrous ending…me at my table all alone. I’m not exactly Brenda Novak (who will be there) YET.

I bought a long black skirt which I’ll wear with a T shirt type top and jewelry. That’s as dressy as I’ll get. I’m not dressing up for the costume night either. I’ll go as myself. And I’ll eat lunch with whoever I sit down with. In spite of my rebel ways, I plan to have fun. Fellow authors, Rolynn Anderson and J L Wilson will be there too, which will make it all the more fun. Haven’t seen either in years.

I encourage all and anyone to attend. It's going to be so much fun.

Oh, and wish me luck. The Power of Love and Murder is up for a RONE in the Romantic Suspense category. No, I don’t have a speech prepared to thank all the little people who helped me achieve my dream. I’ll wing it!

The Motel from Hell by Brenda Whiteside

Getting inspiration from a setting
In every book I've written, there's a piece of me or someone I've known. It could be a phrase that someone I know likes to use. It could be gesture or a style of dress. There might be a setting or a restaurant or a favorite food. I've used my personality traits as well as others.

Or it could be a whole scene from real life. Years ago, my brother spent a miserable night in a motel, but as he told it to me, had me laughing my head off. I promised it would someday show up in a book. Two books later, I used that scene for my male protagonist in The Power of Love and Murder, the fourth book in the series, and my latest release.

This is the scene that led to the book. Please keep in mind, the character isn't my brother. But the hotel was real.

Sometime later, he jerked awake and knocked the book from his chest. He was freezing. He pulled the sheet and blanket over his head, but the chill reached all the way to his toes. Silence. No click, click, bonk noise of the heater. He slid one arm out, brought his cell under the covers, and pushed a button. Four twelve a.m.

Reluctantly, he turned on the lamp, shivered out of bed, and padded three feet to the heater. He leaned over and shut it off then turned it on. Punched low, high, and fan-only buttons over and over. He pounded on the plastic top. “Son of a…” Switching off and on once more got no results. His toes were iced by the outside air flowing under the door. He grabbed his jeans off the chair and stuffed them along the bottom of the door then climbed back under the covers.

The thin blanket and sheet were no match for the drop in temperature. After fifteen minutes of trying to think warm, he had an idea. Out of bed, he jogged to the bathroom and turned the shower to hot, full blast. Immediately, the air around him warmed. He let the chill on his skin subside then headed back to bed and yanked off the sheet, blanket, and pillow. He slipped on his shirt and underwear and carried the bedding back to the bathroom. The floor looked kind of nasty and the sheet, doubled over next to the shower, covered the old linoleum. Wrapping the blanket around him, he settled on top, bumped his knees on the wall, and hunched his shoulders to fit. Good thing he wasn’t a particularly big man. His legs were long on his five foot ten frame and difficult to fold small enough, like a stork squeezing into a wren’s nest. Hopefully, the running, hot water would keep him warm enough to get a few more hours of sleep.

“Ass wipe.” The curse directed at his shyster boss muffled into his pillow. Another curse at himself for all the wrong decisions he’d made that landed him in this position didn’t fully form on his lips. Instead, he recited Step Ten. Continue the personal inventory. What the hell. This might be a crummy hotel, and he was cold and tired, but he felt every shivering, crappy moment of it. Not that a shot of Chopin Vodka to warm him didn’t cross his mind. He would’ve had several and a few snorts, this time last year. And he wouldn’t have felt the cold…or the hard floor…or much of anything else.

Thoughts of a few nights in crummy hotels when his band, Flash Theory, struggled to make a name for themselves played in his head. That brought him wondering about Ian, the English drummer who shared his arrest date. “Bugger you, Ian.” The profanity he’d adopted from the Englishman rolled over his tongue with a smile. He hadn’t contacted his favorite band mate and best friend since sobriety. They weren’t a good influence on each other. Maybe one of these days…

About an hour and a half later, he woke, cold again and his legs cramping. He pulled his knees to his chest and rolled toward the bathroom door, glancing at the ceiling. “What the…” Strips of paint hung like confetti from a New Year’s Eve party. Had the ceiling looked like that last night? He scrambled to his feet, tangled in the blanket, and tripped on the sheet bunching on the floor. He caught himself on the back of the toilet, but his hip hit the bar on the shower door. “Ow!” After turning off the now cold shower water, he extricated his legs from the bedding and surveyed the ceiling again. “Ah, man.” Surely he hadn’t caused that. The place was a dump. Yeah, probably already peeling long before he turned on the shower.

The time had come to flee the motel from hell.

After throwing the blanket and sheet on the bed, he brushed his teeth, and smoothed his beard with a comb. He ran a brush through his hair as he squinted into the cloudy mirror above the sink. Dark curls fell onto his forehead in spite of his effort, and he shrugged, turning from the poor excuse of a mirror. He stuffed his toiletries in the duffle, then loped to the door and retrieved his jeans from the floor. His frozen jeans.

Damp air combined with below freezing wind from under the door had rendered his pants stiff.

I'm glad my brother had such a miserable night!

The P Word by Brenda Whiteside

There have been a few of us Roses that have written about promotion and how we attack it. Mine has been on again off again, but no real plan. I tried to make a plan for books three and four in the series, but I didn't totally follow through. I get involved writing the next book or have some family interference and promotion falls away. With the completion of book five, I've decided to give a promotion plan another shot.

My goal is to concentrate on promotion for July and August. I've studied what some others have done, studied all the notes I've kept on the subject for the last year, and investigated several avenues. The goal is to find a few good avenues that readers use to find the books they choose. These are the top 10 ways I plan to promo.

1) Post on my blog five times a month, post twice a month right here on the Roses of Prose, and guest once a month at other sites.
2) Upload all my books on AskDavid.com for a six month period.
3) Post everyday on my Facebook author page which also goes to Twitter.
4) Tweet twice a day, five days a week on my Twitter page.
5) Place ads three times a month on The Romance Reviews.
6) Advertise/take part in promos on The Romance Studio
7) Do a July promo with N N Light and possibly one in August
8) Advertise on Amazon for the month of July
9) Do an Amazon giveaway for the month of August

10) AND my biggest expenditure, if they will have me, is Bookbub. Once I have a release date for
the fifth book, The Deep Well of Love and Murder, I will attempt to get a book, with a reduced price, listed on Bookbub.

I'm still trying to decide the best way to utilize Facebook in addition to staying active with posts.

If after these efforts, I don't see an appreciable rise in sales, I'll go back to my old mode of operation...write as often as I can and not fret about having the time to do promo.

I've heard so many times over the last ten years that the best promotion an author can do is write the next book. But someone has to let the readers know I write. That's my plan for the next couple of months. I'll report back in at the end of my experiment.

Out of My Comfort Zone #RONEAwardNominee by Brenda Whiteside

I am a semi-finalist in the RONE awards with two books in the same category. (A Legacy of Love and Murder AND The Power of Love and Murder). These two books made it past round one (getting a 4 Star review) on their way to a prestigious RONE award. Step two is a vote...from readers. If I get enough reader votes, then the book will move on to the final phase,  which is Industry Professionals will read and pick the winners.

Back to step two, where you come in. I need your votes. There are 24 nominees in my category, Thriller/Suspense, and only two will move on to the final phase. If you haven't registered with InD'tale before, you'll need to do that. After the contest, if you want to unregister you can. What registering does is allow you to vote, and you'll also receive the online magazine each month for free. It really is a nice one, but you can opt out. The point is...I need your vote first.

The conundrum is I have two books in the category. I think I need to favor one over the other or risk the result of not getting enough votes for either one to move on to the final round. If you've read them both, then vote your conscience if you must, but I'm going to favor The Power of Love and Murder. There is a scene in the book right out of my brother's life, so it's special to me. Plus, it's political misdeeds and rock and roll related...timely and fun.

Thank you so much!

Real Political Fiction by Brenda Whiteside

With a President who sounds like he's still on the campaign trail...half the nation loving him and half the nation hating him...I thought political fiction was in order. Right now, truth is stranger than fiction and no one knows where that story is going, so maybe some real fiction with a happily ever after ending (after all it is still romance) would be more enjoyable.

Wicked politician, crooked FBI agent, ruggedly handsome rock star, and a pixie of a woman juggling it all. You HAVE to love the premise!

No party named, honest. So dive in and get embroiled in Love and Murder.

Penny Sparks has secrets that can ruin a presidential contender, got her family murdered…and mark her as the next hit.

WHO THE HECK IS THAT IN THE MIRROR? by Brenda Whiteside

Two things are on my mind today: 1) I need a new author promo photo 2) the last book in my Love and Murder series is forming on the page with some difficulty.

FDW is going to try to capture the real me with his camera today. I say try, because what I see as me in the mirror and what the camera translates that into, never match. The studio shot I use right now is more than a few years old. I don’t think I look much different, but the camera always does. I lay the blame on FDW. His first degree was in photography so he should be able to work magic just pushing the button. Right? We tried a shoot, outside, a couple of days ago, and out of at least one hundred shots, one is a possibility. I can’t keep my eyes open in the light of day, so I'm all squinchy-eyed in all of them. Today, we’ll try some inside poses. I really hate this. But I feel quite dishonest using a photo that is so outdated. Wish me luck.

The Deep Well of Love and Murder, book five and the last of the Love and Murder Series, is now approaching chapter six. My doubts are starting earlier than usual. I normally have a bout of insecurity later in the process. I wonder if the plot is thick enough, are the characters deep enough, is the villain one the reader loves to hate, and so on. Maybe because it’s the last book, I’m having an end of series let down. Yesterday, a reader told me that The Power of Love and Murder made her cry. That made me perfectly happy. To my knowledge, I’ve never made anyone cry with my storytelling. What a compliment! And the bar is now higher for book five!!

Dirty Rotten Politics and...Love by Brenda Whiteside

My newest release, The Power of Love and Murder, book four in the Love and Murder Series, held a double whammy of wicked fun to write. I have TWO villains in this novel. When the original idea came to me, the politics of late were not on my mind, yet I chose a crooked, evil politician as one of the villains.

In this year's election, we had a non-politician hell-bent on causing trouble, and a seasoned female politician who some said we couldn't trust this time around. My senator aiming at the presidency is neither, but wicked he is!

But the other villain, FBI Special Agent Vince Elams, was the most fun to put on paper. Vince is the villain you think twice about. He gives you moments of awww, that's why he's bad...should I feel sorry for him? Then he turns around and is rotten so you chide yourself for thinking any kind thoughts about him. Here's an intro to Vince, the first time we learn a little about him:

Vince rubbed his face, digging his thumb and finger into his eyes to reach a deep-seated fatigue. Finding dirt on opponents, uncovering weak spots on other equally ambitious politicians, greasing the pockets of dishonest corporate movers and shakers, and using his resources at the FBI for illegal purposes meant nothing. He considered the activities…a game he enjoyed.

Murder? Hadn’t mattered thirteen years ago. He touched the photo of his wife. “Sorry, Brita.” When she died, his life, any life, had lost all significance. Back then, he’d sold his soul to the devil in the body of CEO and someday Senator Clyde Westingly, and there was no absolution to be found. So be it. He’d done Westingly’s bidding without thinking, as if some other force drove his body, taking him along for the ride. So many years ago. Hell bound for sure, yet he just didn’t have the stomach for murder anymore.

I hope you'll enjoy reading about Vince and all my other characters as much as I enjoyed writing them. The Power of Love and Murder releases worldwide on December 21, although you can pre-order the eBook edition right now.
