Month of #Love #99cents Sale (No #Piracy) by Brenda Whiteside

Following on the heels of Andrea's Post yesterday, the illegal distribution of someone else's creative endeavor drives me bananas. Those who steal for profit should be prosecuted or at the very least shut down. If an author wants to give away her books for free, that should be her choice.

But there's another side to this, and I doubt there's anything that can be done about it. Art, in any form, has long been considered a product of love not profit. No one would think the work and material and time that goes into making an item such as a light bulb is born from love or that the end product should be offered up for all of society to enjoy for free. For some reason, creativity, in any form is viewed differently. Not to say people do not want to put out big bucks for a Van Gogh or a first edition of Alice in Wonderland. Eventually, creations are valued. Unfortunately, I think the Internet is the biggest reason there is a free for all attitude on music and books today.

The Internet has introduced millions to what they might not otherwise know. It enriches. Yet, it also takes away. What do you think? Can I blame the Internet?

I'm offering up two ALMOST FREE reads. Books three and four of my Love and Murder Series are on sale this month.

Who's the #Character? My Alter-Ego is a Sexy Author by Brenda Whiteside

Not all characters spring entirely from an author's imagination. At least, that's the case with me. When an author says "be careful, you just might end up in my book" they aren't joking.

There is some model or true to life person in many of the characters who roam the pages of my novels. After all, truth is often way crazier and more colorful than fiction much of the time. So, just between us, I'm going to divulge some of those inspirations. You won't tell, right?

For the most part, my Love and Murder Series springs from my imagination. But not entirely. The hero in The Art of Love and Murder is Sheriff Chance Meadowlark. He started out as Lance...which happens to be my son's name. He also happens to be my son's height and build with a strong character for protection of the women in his life. When I wrote the first love scene, egad, the name had to change!

Book two, Southwest of Love and Murder, the heroine, Phoebe, is a murder/mystery writer who loves hippy/gypsy style clothing, lots of jewelry, and sex. Hum, well, she's my alter ego. And who better to model the hero after than Robert Redford. No, I don't know him personally, but it was his face I saw interacting with me, er, Phoebe.

A Legacy of Love and Murder, book three and set in Austria, is probably the purest of the series when it comes to characters. But I do have a close friend in Austria and with his help I threw in some German. He's also very good looking like the hero, Tobias Wolf.

My brother spent an awful night in a cheap motel and that one scene was inspiration for The Power of Love and Murder. I built Jake from my brother and my son. My brother owned a tile business for years and my son was a rock and roll singer in his own band for years. But another interesting character in the book is Vince Elams, an FBI agent turned hit man. A friend of mine, Vince Smale, asked if I'd put him in one of my books someday. Friend Vince is a big man and not a villain, but switching up his name did the trick. P.S. he loves the character.

Three characters in Sleeping with the Lights On do exist. I've changed them a
Mom and Dad were the stars of Post-War Dreams
little to fit the story, but they are very much the models. And I won't say which of them for sure. There was a fourth who had one minor scene...the jerk of a boss. Oh yes, I knew that man!

In other books, it might be a personality trait or physical trait of someone I've encountered or known in the past.

So, watch out! You could be in my book...let me know if you recognize anyone.

Out of My Comfort Zone #RONEAwardNominee by Brenda Whiteside

I am a semi-finalist in the RONE awards with two books in the same category. (A Legacy of Love and Murder AND The Power of Love and Murder). These two books made it past round one (getting a 4 Star review) on their way to a prestigious RONE award. Step two is a vote...from readers. If I get enough reader votes, then the book will move on to the final phase,  which is Industry Professionals will read and pick the winners.

Back to step two, where you come in. I need your votes. There are 24 nominees in my category, Thriller/Suspense, and only two will move on to the final phase. If you haven't registered with InD'tale before, you'll need to do that. After the contest, if you want to unregister you can. What registering does is allow you to vote, and you'll also receive the online magazine each month for free. It really is a nice one, but you can opt out. The point is...I need your vote first.

The conundrum is I have two books in the category. I think I need to favor one over the other or risk the result of not getting enough votes for either one to move on to the final round. If you've read them both, then vote your conscience if you must, but I'm going to favor The Power of Love and Murder. There is a scene in the book right out of my brother's life, so it's special to me. Plus, it's political misdeeds and rock and roll related...timely and fun.

Thank you so much!

Winner, Loser, Give It Up by Brenda Whiteside

I'm not big on entering contests. I particularly steer away from contests that require me to ask others to vote for me. In the publishing world there are contests for covers, first lines, unpublished works, published works, and probably others I haven't paid attention to. That said, I have entered a few, which is probably why I don't like entering them.

Before I wrote novels, I won a poetry contest and an essay contest. I was okay with them then not having had a bad experience. So, a few years later after I completed Sleeping with the Lights On, I entered it in two contests for unpublished books. It usually takes a few months to hear the results. In the meantime, I submitted the book to The Wild Rose Press for publication. A couple of months later, I got "the call"...actually the email. They wanted my book!

The next day, within hours of each other, I received two more emails. The first email was pretty bland, letting me know my book did not fare well in their contest. The scores were not even close to the top. The second email wasn't any better...my book was a dismal disaster. What did I do? I laughed. I was contracted! I often wonder what I would've done had I not submitted the book and received the results of the contest first. Makes me shudder.

Over the last eight years, I have entered a handful of contests and have been disappointed most often. Southwest of Love and Murder was a runner up once in a small contest. A couple of years ago, I had an agent, and she warned me against entering chapter contests. She felt it was a waste of effort as they were not fairly judged since most of the judges were fellow authors and competitors. I don't like to think my peers would not be fair minded in their judging.

Apparently, last summer, I took the plunge to try one more contest with my then latest release. I say apparently because I'd forgotten all about it until I received an email two days ago. I'd entered A Legacy of Love and Murder for an EPIC Award (Electronic Publishing Industry Coalition). This is a prodigious contest. I was thrilled. Now for the kicker...

As of this morning, if you go to the site to see the list of finalists, A Legacy of Love and Murder is not there. I've emailed and am waiting a response. I won't be surprised if they emailed me in error. Such is my experience with contests.

TELL A BOOK BY ITS COVER? by Brenda Whiteside

My last post concerned having a tough skin as an author. In particular, I lamented someone commenting negatively about my latest release, A Legacy of Love and Murder. This is the third book in what will be a five book series. I’m here to update what I did about this problem (from my last post):

The cover has a swastika. I thought my cover artist did a great job. To me, it spoke to the suspense and danger of the book. Apparently, this might not appeal to some readers. Truthfully, only one reader told me it didn't appeal to her even though she loved the first two books. She won't read it. Only one...but if one, then there could be more who feel that way.

I checked sales for the first two months of each of the first three books in the series. Whoops. I could only conclude the cover was an obstacle. After further research which consisted of asking for some input from other writers, including an organization I belong to, Sisters in Crime, I decided to take my concerns to my publisher, The Wild Rose Press. They listened, they pondered for a very short time, and bam! I had a new cover and an improved blurb.

The story is the story, and I’ve gotten great reviews and comments…I just had to get those who tell a book by its cover to open that cover!

I’m happy to officially announce the new cover for A Legacy of Love and Murder, book three of the Love and Murder Series.

Blurb:
In Austria to meet her great-grandfather and explore his castle estate filled with priceless art, August Myer arrives to find he’s died suspiciously. As one of the heirs, her life is in danger, turning this fairytale Alpine adventure into a nightmare of veiled threats, unexplained accidents, and murder.

Inspector Tobias Wolf splits his time between his profession and fighting the spread of neo-Nazism. But when the beautiful, intriguing American crosses his path during a murder investigation, ensuring her safety challenges his priorities…and his heart.

When August learns the handsome inspector is concealing a personal involvement and the death of her great grandfather is somehow connected, she takes the investigation into her own hands. The outcome could be the death of both of them.

Tough Skin? Mostly By Brenda Whiteside

I think I have pretty tough skin. My stint as an office manager/scheduler for a swimming pool company gave me the first layer of toughness. You can't imagine how irritated and rude people can be when it gets hot in Phoenix and they're waiting for their pool to be finished. I was the first level of contact AND the crew scheduler. I got all the grief.

Skip ahead quite a few years to my current status of author. The skin better be good and thick to handle critiques of your work, bad reviews, and comments that hit below the belt concerning your creations by people who don't even know they're swinging at you. Okay, that was rather long and convoluted. Let me explain.

I'm three books published into a five book series. Confession here...when I wrote book one, I didn't actually think about the series angle enough. I set book one and two in Arizona, but because of the story in book one, book three takes place in Austria. Kind of wacky, but I went with it. It involves the neo-Nazi movement too.

Where is my self proclaimed tough skin on this issue? I'll admit, I'm bothered. What can I do about it? Not much now. I do keep wondering, are there others who are missing out on what I think is one of my most involved plots and story to date because of my setting and villain choice? Jeez, I just don't know.
