For Those Who Love To Eat...Keep Reading by Jannine Gallant

Fall is here...at least in my mind. Temps have dropped into the 70s, which is great. The local kids have gone back to school. Ginger has NOT gotten used to the cars parking up and down the street and parents/kids walking by in droves morning and afternoon. We live across from a temporary school site while the regular one is being renovated for TWO YEARS. I can't say I'm any more thrilled about it than Ginger is.

Can't walk through the school anymore. (sigh)

My oldest went back to college two weeks ago. My youngest leaves in a few days. The nest will be empty (and much quieter with less laundry) once again. LOL The boat ramp (after this weekend) will once more be a peaceful place for writing 8 hours a day. Gotta love that part! Also, the smoke from the fires is mostly gone. Lake Tahoe is beautiful again!

In the spirit of fall, I'm moving away from the grill and back into my kitchen for cooking (at least part of the time). Since I couldn't think of anything writing related to blog about, I thought I'd share an awesome chicken recipe. I hope you enjoy it!

Chicken Breasts with Cheese and Chiles

4 Boneless Chicken Breast halves lightly pounded to even thickness
1 cup shredded Jack (or Pepper Jack) Cheese
1 4 oz can diced green chiles
2 Green Onions chopped
4 slices Bacon cooked and crumbled
1 Avocado chopped
1/2 cup Sour Cream

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lay breasts in a baking dish and cover lightly with foil. Bake for 20 minutes or until cooked through depending on thickness. Mix cheese and chiles together. Cover each cooked breast, patting to hold in place. Sprinkle with green onion and bacon. Return to oven uncovered for 3 minutes or until cheese melts. Serve with avocado and sour cream. Yum!

A Blooming Paradise! by Jannine Gallant

I love Tahoe. Well, I love Tahoe in the summer when we're not buried in snow. After subjecting you to snow pictures all winter, I thought I'd treat you to a walk in the woods and meadow. I took all these on my usual daily hike with Ginger a couple of days ago. Just flowers and no dog photos this time. Enjoy!

Lupine

Mule Ears

Not sure what these are.

Or these. I couldn't get closer because the meadow is still soggy.

Indian Paintbrush

I hope you enjoyed my Tour de Tahoe flowers. If you'd like to cool off with a bit of Tahoe snow and a chilling mystery, WILDE THING is still on sale for 99 cents. Get your copy at Amazon or check out my website for buy links.

Have a great summer! Stay cool!

WILDE THING and more Pioneer Adventures by Jannine Gallant

I know, I know! I've been talking on and on about this book releasing for a while now. Well, you can finally get your copy! This story is special to me because it's set mostly in Tahoe in the winter. Since I'm currently enduring the biggest winter we've had in...well, as long as I can remember, and I've lived here 31 years, you can get a taste of what life in snow country is like...vicariously.

That's Ginger on the pile of snow that is currently my front yard!

Remember my post about pioneer life with no power for five days? Well, to add insult to injury, the pump for our Timberland (that's my neighborhood where my heroine also lives) well went out. Three days with no running water! You'd think it would be easy to melt snow into water, right? Wrong! The stuff that was falling when the disaster occurred was super dry. I put a pan of snow on the stove, and it evaporated. Perrrrrrfect! I am, however, a quick learner. I seeded the pot with a little water then add scoops of snow to melt slowly. A full dishpan gave me about a half a pot of water. We had bottled water for drinking and cooking, but my snow melt was for washing dishes and flushing toilets...and when I couldn't stand it any longer, washing my hair in the sink. If you've ever had a hankering to experience life in the good old days before modern conveniences, I'm here to tell you it isn't as romantic as it sounds.

A beautiful day after the storm.

However, I survived. My hero and heroine almost didn't a few times during the course of their adventure. And when it comes to their relationship, Hannah is determined to keep Tripp at arm's length. Read on to see what I mean...

Her hand stilled over the tomato she was slicing as he squeezed by her to set the glasses on the counter. Ignoring the sizzle of energy his body contact produced, she added lettuce to the sandwiches, plated them, then pulled a bag of grapes out of the refrigerator. “There you go. Lunch in under five minutes.”
   “Successful, smart, hot and efficient.”
She slid onto the stool next to him. “I’m simply amazing. The eighth wonder of the world.”
   “Hannah?”
She paused with her sandwich halfway to her mouth. “Hmm?”
“I was a complete idiot back when you were in college. If I had half a brain, I would have been smart enough to ask you out all those years ago. Everything you say makes me smile.” He popped a grape into his mouth. “Your dry sense of humor is a huge turn-on.”
“Good to know, but I’m still not going to date you.”
“We’ll see about that. I’m afraid you’ve ruined me for lesser women. Every time a girl hits on me, I’m going to judge her by my new Hannah-meter.”
She choked on her sandwich. Her eyes watered as he pounded her on the back until she stopped coughing.
A concerned green gaze met hers. “You okay?”
“Yes.” She let out a long breath. “I don’t know where to begin…with the Hannah-meter or the girls hitting on you part of that statement.”
He shrugged. “What? Am I supposed to pretend like they don’t?”
“No wonder Eden was in a tizzy when she found out we had dinner together. The women apparently line up to sleep with you.”
He grinned. “Not an actual line. Too much pushing and shoving for that.”
   She smiled back. “Tripp?”
   “Yes?”
“You make me laugh, too, even if you do have an incredibly inflated ego.” She pulled a grape off the bunch and twirled it between her fingers. “A Hannah-meter, huh? I don’t want to brag, but if an IQ test is part of the process, you might as well go join a monastery because you’re not going to be getting much action.”
He let out a resigned sigh. “That high, huh?”
   She nodded. “I’m afraid so.”
“In that case, I’ll have to keep working on you since one thing’s for certain.”
Her breath caught in her throat, and her heart beat a little faster when he laid a hand over hers. “What’s that?”
“I’m definitely not cut out to be a monk.”

What We Do To Write by Jannine Gallant

1000+ words written, and it isn't even 8 o'clock yet...

Lake Forest Boat Ramp

Every summer, I work at the boat ramp on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. I have a degree in English and history. I have years of management experience, granted all from my time before kids. Said daughters think I should find a better job since a smart monkey could check in boats at the ramp and take money. They actually will admit I'm fairly intelligent and am wasted in my current position. But, the boat ramp offers me one thing I can't get in a more challenging job...hours of uninterrupted writing time. Since my income helps our family's financial situation, I'll continue to spend my summers getting up at 4:20 AM so I can be at the ramp at 5 o'clock sharp to let in the occasional fisherman. From 6:00 to 7:00 I get a few water skiers. Then from about 9 AM onward, vacation boaters cruise past my little booth. July can be crazy busy, but for the other four months, I have hours and hours of time to write between boats. From the perspective of someone on a deadline, this is pure gold.

So, maybe my paycheck job isn't mentally taxing, but writing is what I want to do. It's what I've always wanted to do, so I've found a way to make it possible. Even if I have to get up at an ungodly hour of the morning!

And my view is incredible. That's always a plus!

Sunrise one morning from my booth.

Meadow next to my booth.

What sacrifices are you willing to make in pursuit of your passion?

Photo Op! Emerald Bay by Jannine Gallant

I've had a busy weekend and was scrambling to put together my blog post by Sunday night. On Friday, my youngest, Kristen (a high school junior) and I spent the day driving all over Northern California to look at colleges. Okay, maybe it just seemed like all over... We checked out Sonoma State in the wine country then stopped at UC Davis (my alma mater) on the way home. Both beautiful schools, but it was a looooong day. On Saturday, a group of Austrian exchange students arrived for a week long stay in Tahoe. We're keeping two girls for the whole week but had two extras Saturday night since their host family wasn't home from spring break yet. This is the second time we've hosted Austrian students, and it's always fun for our kids to learn a little about a different culture.

Sunday morning a group of us took some of the kids down to Emerald Bay for a hike. Emerald Bay is one of the most photographed spots in America. A real "gem" on the south-west corner of Lake Tahoe. I've used the Tahoe area as a setting for a few of my books and mentioned Emerald Bay in a couple of them. Take a look at the photos, and you be the judge. When it comes to sheer natural beauty, our little corner of the world is hard to beat!

Spring in the Woods by Jannine Gallant

My favorite part of the day is walking in the woods with Ginger. Right now, the wildflowers are beginning to bloom. After a winter of no snow in Tahoe, they're out early and probably won't last long, but I'm enjoying them while they're here. I hope you will, too!

This purple ground cover is super pretty, and grows like crazy. I'd love to transfer it to my yard, but I'm not a gardener by any stretch of the imagination!

More snow plants than I've ever seen before this year. Not sure why since we didn't have much snow. This one's a king-daddy, though it's hard to tell how big it is from the picture.

The lupine are just beginning to bloom.

Someone told me these bushes are service berries. They flower in white masses. Super pretty!

I'm not sure what these are. They look like big daisies. But I thought this was a neat photo.

Okay, not a flower. This little guy visited me at the boat ramp the other morning when I was working. Couldn't resist sharing him!

Ginger trying to cross the creek without getting her paws wet at the end of our walk. She fell in. Really funny, but I missed the shot!

This is the final week Every Move She Makes will be on sale for 99 cents. A lot of the action happens in the woods around Lake Tahoe. My characters also enjoy this wild scenery. You can purchase your copy at Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Kobo.

I also updated my website. Tell me what you think!

Run Into Fall by Jannine Gallant

Yep, it’s that time of year again. Temperatures are cooler, a few leaves have started to turn and the kids have gone back to school. A whole new routine begins—one where I can write without constantly hearing, “Mom, do you know where my flip-flops went?” (As if they got up and walked away of their own accord!) “Mom, what’s for breakfast (or lunch or dinner)? Mom, can you drive me…” (Fill in the blank—the choices are endless.)

Tara at the 2012 Championship Race
In our house, the beginning of the school year means the beginning of fall sports. No, my girls didn’t get their athletic ability from me, thank heavens. My husband is a sports fanatic. (Not watching—doing!) While for most high school sports enthusiasts, fall means football, it doesn’t around here. My girls run cross country. My youngest, Kristen, is a freshman this year. Her older sister, Tara (a junior), spent the summer brainwashing my beautiful ballerina into believing she likes to run. Tara is a die-hard competitor (Nevada state champ last year—yes we live in CA, but Tahoe kids compete in Nevada since it’s so much closer.) This year Tara’s goal is not only to be personal State Champ again but to have her girls’ team win as well. It didn’t take a math whiz to figure out she needed at least one more fast runner to accomplish her goal. Kristen is a recreational runner. Tara decided that somewhere in her sister’s genetic makeup, there must be a competitive racer just waiting to be released. So she is slowly but surely torturing her into shape, determined to let the team’s missing link loose! LOL Kristen is improving. She has until the end of October to accomplish her sister’s (and what is becoming her) goal.

So, on most Fridays I drive an hour or two (or three) to races to cheer them on.

Since we are so immersed in the running world around here, it isn’t surprising I chose to make one of my heroines a runner. In Maybe This Time, Chloe runs into her old high school pal, Adam, on the course of the Lake Tahoe Marathon. A friendship turns into a romance in this story about finding love a second time around. There’s plenty of humor too. The book opens on the set of a reality dating show set in Hawaii. The show’s name—Get Lei’d. One of my more clever moments if I do say so myself. So if you enjoy running or reality TV or funny romances, give this one a try.

What’s the fall sport of choice in your house?

Take a Walk on the Wild Side by Jannine Gallant

snow plants
What do you do when your brain is mush and your muse is on an extended vacation? When I'm certain every word I write is just so much drivel, or I stare at the blank computer screen and my mind is--well, blank, I get my butt out of the chair and take a hike with my dog.

lupine
I consider myself blessed because I can walk out my door and straight into the woods where I can go for miles if I want. Usually, Ginger and I do a three mile loop to the creek and back. This time of year, the woods around Lake Tahoe are bursting with color.

mule's ear
Wild flowers take my breath away and reactivate my spongy brain. First come the snow plants, poking their heads out of the ground shortly after the last of the snow melts. Next thing I know, lupine is everywhere. When the mule's ear and paintbrush bloom, I know it's truly summer.

paintbrush
Ginger and I finish our walk through the meadow. Until this year, we had to avoid the meadow until it dried out, usually late in June, but last year the California State Parks system put in raised trails. Very cool to get to stroll through the meadow while it's still green and beautiful and a host to bunches of little flowers, camas lilies, buttercups and others I can't name.

little yellow flowers (I fail as a botonist!)
So, the next time you're having a major case of writer's block, try taking a walk. I swear your muse will pack up her sunscreen and beach chair and come join you. I composed this whole blog while I was out in the woods today. Tomorrow, I'll figure out where my WIP is headed, or I won't come home until I do. So if I'm not here on the 18th, you'll know why. LOL

American the Beautiful

By Jannine Gallant

One of our April topics is Keep America Beautiful. I feel blessed to live in an incredibly beautiful place – Lake Tahoe. I can walk out my door and hike for miles in the pristine wilderness. The lake is a few minutes walk from my house. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Of course there are drawbacks. When I’m fighting with a four foot high berm left by the snowplow, trying to clear my driveway in a raging blizzard, I tend to forget what a joy it is living in Tahoe. No place is perfect! But after the storm passes, the glistening snow covered world is magical.

When it comes to my writing, I’ve capitalized on the Beautiful America theme. Two of my books are set partially in Tahoe. Maybe This Time features Emerald Bay on the cover, something I specifically asked for from the cover artist.

The balance of the story takes place on the California coast. Our shoreline is truly spectacular, but then I’m a teensy bit biased being a California girl born and bred.

Not one of those SoCal beach babes, mind you. I grew up at the very top of the state in the Redwood Forest. You can’t really do justice to the sheer power of a redwood tree in a photograph. You have to stand beneath one, with your head tilted so far back your neck aches, to appreciate the grandeur of the world’s tallest tree. The thick redwood forest, shrouded in fog, has an eerie feel to it that called to me as a writer.

So I wrote A Deadly Love about a serial killer loose in these woods. This book will be released in August.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the photos of my beautiful corner of America. For more information on my books, please visit my website and blog.

A New Adventure

I’m thrilled to be a part of the revamped Roses of Prose! In the spirit of new beginnings, a little info about me. Probably more than you ever wanted to know! LOL

Jannine the Author
I write romantic suspense and contemporary romance with a bit of mystery thrown in. I can’t seem to write a story that doesn’t keep the reader guessing… My first novel, Victim of Desire, was published by The Wild Rose Press last spring. My current work in progress is a sequel starring the heroine’s sister, Grace.

I’ll admit it—I have a weakness for those submission calls tossed out by publishers. I can’t seem to resist, even if I’m hip deep in another story. When I saw the call for the Class of ’85 series about a 25 year high school reunion, I was hooked. I wrote Lonely Road to You, but could I stop there? Not a chance. I adored this series and the interaction with the other authors. After All These Years was my second offering, and Maybe This Time was my third. I really have to work on my powers of resistance! LOL

I’d just finished Maybe This Time when the call came for the new Honky Tonk Hearts series. I don’t write about cowboys, or do I? Apparently I do. I told you I’m a sucker for a submission call. Nothing But Trouble was an absolute blast to write. I don’t have a release date yet for this one. It’s currently in the editing stages, but I’ll keep you updated on its progress.

And finally, my first love. Historical romance. I double majored in history and creative writing, so you’d think I’d write historicals. I do—or did. I wrote three of them, long meandering sagas that gathered an impressive pile of rejections. I took a pair of pruning sheers to the final one and hacked away. The final result was a really wonderful story (if I do say so myself) set in rural Colorado in 1880. Bittersweet will be released by the Whiskey Creek Press in February of 2012.

Jannine when she isn’t glued to her computer!I live in gorgeous Lake Tahoe with my husband, two daughters, and dog, Ginger. When I’m not writing, I’m either hiking (or snowshoeing depending on the season) in the woods around our home with Ginger, chauffeuring my girls from one sporting event to another, trying to catch up on housework, or cooking. I do love to cook, and for those of you interested, I post recipes on my personal blog at http://janninegallant.blogspot.com/. I grew up in a small town, live in the mountains, and love being outdoors. You’ll find a big dose of small town life or outdoor adventure in all my books.

To all you readers out there, what are your favorite settings for a story?
