Why Romance?

I’m Barbara Edwards and I write paranormal romance. At least I do this year. In the past I’ve published historical romance and romantic suspense. I’m excited to be a member of Roses of Prose and picture myself as a rambling rose, all over the place with lots of scented flowers and a few thorns.
My personal interests are as varied. My husband and I love to travel, yet I am babying a garden and several antique roses at home. We participate in Civil War re-enactments with the most recent being The Battle of Manassass- the first in the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War. The pictures are posted on my blog http://barbaraedwardscomments.worpress.com Next week we’ll be at a local event in Woodbury, CT. In the cracks between writing, I am knitting a sweater.
Always an avid reader, I don’t restrict myself to one genre, but I clearly remember what triggered my fascination with romance novels. I pulled a muscle in my back. For those of you who have suffered the same thing, I don’t need to describe it. For those of you lucky enough not to, it is indescribable. I was flat on my back and bored to tears when I asked my husband to go to the used book store. He returned with a shopping bag of books. I guess he told the clerk they were for a woman, since it was half Barbara Cartland books. Are you luck enough to remember them? It was my introduction to a new world.
Since then I’ve read thousands of romances from inspirational to erotica, and every genre in between. I have a hundred favorite authors and so many books my husband wants to empty the shelves and burn them some dark night.
The biggest accomplishment of my life is being a romance author.
It helps that I believe love is the most powerful force in the world. Love gives strength to face life’s problems. Love can overcome hate. Love warms the soul and lights the dark. Love creeps up and bites you on the butt when you least expect it.
So I’m working on Book Three in the Finding Rhodes End series and the hero and heroine already know there’s something special happening.

Lily Alban escapes a murderous stalker, but his vicious attack leaves her with the ability to see auras. She finds safety in the tiny hamlet of Rhodes End where a stranger stands out like a red light. Try as she might to deny her growing desire for Cole, she seeks his help but soon discovers the man she loves is not a man at all.
Werewolf Cole Benedict resists his attraction to Lily. A botanist researching the healing herbs to find a cure for Lycanthropy, he’s determined to protect Lily from her stalker as well as himself even in human form, but instinct takes over when he changes to his inner beast.
Together they must use their extraordinary gifts to catch Lily’s stalker before he attacks again, but revealing their secrets to one another could destroy their growing love or save them both.
“What makes you so important? Or is this another secret?”
Cole’s eyes darkened. “Lily. I’m pushing the line with you. Give me some slack.”
“I want answers, Cole.” She grabbed his arm as he turned and pulled him to a halt.
He gently, carefully drew her fierce grip into his grasp. His golden eyes heated as he lifted her hand to his lips. “I already told you, Lily. You’d have to mate with me to learn all my secrets.”
Urgent need raced from his lips to her center. His scorching gaze melted her from the inside out. All her being longed to step into his arms, to become one in a way she’d never known. She trembled as she recognized the danger.

Hi Brenda,
Ask me anything. I love to talk and talk and talk until your ears go numb.

I've always thought acting and writing are closely related - with both you get to experience an alternate reality.

OMG, I so remember reading Barbara Cartland in high school. My mom probably figured she wouldn't corrupt me!

You sound like a busy woman, Barbara. Great getting to know you better.

Congratulations on your success in several different romance sub-genres! The re-enactments sound like fun. I also agree that acting & writing are closely related - I've not done much acting but have had a couple of plays produced and it's incredible to see your characters take on flesh and walk about saying words you've put in their mouths!

Hi Jannine,
Now I realize how sweet she was, almost enough to put a diabetic in a coma.
I wish I'd kept those books. sigh.

Hi Glenys,
You've done the one thing I want to try, write a play. I'm impressed. Thanks for dropping by.

Hi, Barbara,
Great to meet you! The enactments sound like a blast and I'm adding Ancient Blood to my TBR. I can't resist a werewolf!

Hi there, I enjoyed your post. My first contemporary romance will be released by Wild Rose Press this fall. I'm so excited. I started reading romance when I was in junior high school. Never stopped. Love all of the sub-genre, but probably romantic suspense the most.

Hi Barbara,
Great post. Sorry about your back problems, luckily I have never had such troubles, but I know people who have and they tell me the pain is cruel.
Barbara Cartland, now that is a trip down memory lane, I read quite a few of her books in the early days of my romance reading career and then like you I graduated to romance writing and became a published author.

Regards

Margaret
