A Day To Be Remembered...Again

I have lived in the Boston area for the last twenty-nine years. My husband is from Boston and it’s our home. What a beautiful day Monday was. After an awfully cold and bitter winter, it was great to enjoy a day of sunshine, baseball and the Boston Marathon. Anyone that lives in this area understands the magnitude of the marathon, even if you have never run a race in your life.

My hubbie was off for the day. It was a holiday in Boston- Patriot’s Day. We watched the Red Sox win with a walk-off double against Tampa Bay. I called my mom. Right after I talked with her, she called right back and wanted to know if my kids were okay. Okay? I hadn’t a clue what she was talking about. I turned on the television. The next moment, the whole of the terror reigned down on me. Immediately, my husband was on the phone. Thank goodness everyone in my family was accounted for and was safe. Not all families were so lucky. In a blink of an eye, life changed once again.

For me the memory of September 11th was vividly relived. My husband lost friends on a one of the flights from Boston. I remember every detail of that day as I’m sure I will Monday. Besides my writing, I work at a major hospital in Boston that received victims of the bombing. When I got to work that night, I had to walk through a barrage of police offices. Quite surreal. It puts life in perspective.

EMBRACE OF THE ENEMY

Embrace of the Enemy—the second book in my series, Winds of Betrayal, is free today and tomorrow. Amazon offers these free days as a promotion to help with your sales. It’s a great way for readers to get a taste of your writing.

Honestly, I feel strange running a promotion right after the bombing at the Boston Marathon. When you set your date for the promotion, you also set dates to promote your book. So the promotion is on going. Sometimes you make money from your promotion; other times you don’t. But I made a decision. Not only will I donate any money I make from Embrace of the Enemy but also the other books of the series. Winds of Betrayal is set during the American Revolution. It was inspired by American Patriots. So it’s appropriate.

All sale proceeds from the Winds of Betrayal Series from April 16, 2013- April 21, 2013 will be donated to the American Red Cross to benefit the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. This will include all three books of the series—The Cry For Freedom, Embrace of the Enemy, and Kiss of Deceit.

If the series doesn’t interest you, I encourage you to donate to the American Red Cross. ARC has always been there for us.

Research Opens New Realms of Possibilities by Jena Galifany

Being a writer is a big open door. Like reading, one may experience a wide variety of places, times and people that one would not have opportunity to explore in their day to day live. Unlike reading, the writer can take any one of those places, times and people in any direction they care to explore. All it takes is some research, and imagination, and the writer is on their way.

I think I like the research for a story as much as I enjoy the actual writing. A few semesters ago, I took a writing class at college with my daughter. During the course of the semester, we were required to do a research paper. I'd heard the term over the years of my daughter going through school but I'd never personally written one. This was surely going to be a challenge and a lot of fun.

We needed to begin by choosing a subject. So many possibilities. So many subjects. I live in the high desert where the Space Shuttles were built. We have schools named for the different ships and streets as well. years ago, I was privileged to see the Shuttle Challenger as it was taken from where it was built in Palmdale, out to Edwards Air Force Base. It rolled right past me and I was overwhelmed at the size of the white space ship. She was beautiful. Thus, I decided to write my paper on the Shuttle program.

There were so many ships and so much information, I had to limit the possibilities because the paper was only to be seven to ten pages in length. Since I'd actually see the Challenger, I narrowed my research to her.

Everyone recalls the day we lost Challenger in the explosion that took the lives of the seven astronauts. I decided that few knew of the many "First time in History" events that took place aboard her before that fated day.
_____________________________

·                     Challenger was fitted with DuPont White Nomex Felt Insulated Thermal Protection Tiles (TPS) on the payload bay doors, upper wing surfaces, and the rear fuselage. The TPS protects the ship from the intense heat generated during re-entry.

·                     During the Flight Readiness Firing (FRF) test of the engines, a hydrogen leak was detected. Five days later, a second FRF was initiated that confirmed the cracks. SSME1 (Space Shuttle Main Engine 1) had to be replaced. SSME2 and SSME3 were removed, thoroughly tested and reinstalled. It was the first time the main engines of any space craft had been removed and/or replaced while on the launch pad.

·                     Challenger was the first launch to require two FRFs before her maiden voyage.

·                     Her maiden flight, 4 April, 1983, was the first to be launched from Mobile Launch Platform 2, a new addition at the Kennedy Space Center.

·                     On 18 March, 1965, Russian Alexei Leonov was the first human to space walk. Aboard Challenger, space walking, for the first time would have a purpose other than being able to say one had left the safety of the capsule. Mission Specialists Story Musgrave and Donald H. Peterson tested the new EMU (Extravehicular Mobility Unit) during a four hour space walk, the first of the Space Shuttle Program. Story Musgrove was the only person to fly on all five of the space-worthy shuttles.

·                     Challenger’s second mission was Sally Rides’ first flight. On 18 June, 1983, she became the first American woman in space.

·                     Challenger’s next launch was the first time American astronauts attempted a night launch since Apollo 17 in 1972. The purpose of the night launch was the Insat-1B India satellite. In order for it to be deployed in the proper position, the satellite had to be placed above the Pacific Ocean at sunset. In order for this to occur, Challenger had to be launched at night.

·                     At the end of this mission, Challenger made the first night landing as well. On 5 September, 1983, 7,500 feet of desert from the end of the runway at Edwards Air Force Base, California, had to be lit to show astronauts the glide path for the landing. In the dark, Challenger was invisible to the watchers until seconds before touch-down

·                     Aboard Challenger during this night launch and landing was Mission Specialist Lt. Colonel Guion S. Bluford, Jr., the first African-American astronaut in space.

·                     Challenger’s next flight was launched on 3 February, 1984. During the flight, Mission Specialist Bruce McCandless, II, was the first astronaut in history to walk in space untethered to the shuttle via a compressed gas rocket pack called the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU). The unit is a self-contained jet-propelled backpack that resembles an easy chair without the seat. The photo of McCandless completely untethered from the Challenger is the most used and most recognized NASA photo of all time. McCandless ventured 320 feet from Challenger, a walk that made him the first human Earth-orbiting satellite in history.

·                     During this mission, launched 6 April, 1984, George Nelson was the next to utilize the MMU. He was to capture the satellite Solar Maximum Mission (Solar Max) for the first retrieval and repair of a satellite. The capture failed and the satellite went into a spin. After control was regained by ground control at Goddard Spaceflight Center, the satellite was captured via the RMS robotic arm. James D. van Hoften assisted Nelson in replacing the attitude control mechanism and electronics before the Solar Max was redeployed. It was now possible to repair satellites instead of writing them off as lost and useless.

·                     Challenger hosted the first shuttle mission to carry two women into space: Sally Ride and Kathryn D. Sullivan. Kathryn made two historical firsts aboard Challenger’s sixth flight. In order to perform her mission of demonstrating the ORS (Orbital Refueling System), Kathryn spent three and a half hours utilizing the EVA unit. She was the first American woman to space walk. She also successfully completed the first simulation of in-orbit spacecraft refueling. She conducted refueling of a satellite using hydrazine fuel and the ORS

·                     On 28 January, 1986, seventy-three seconds after lift-off, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded, destroying the shuttle and killing all seven of the astronauts aboard. The Challenger’s final first was that the tragedy was the first in-flight loss of astronauts in the history of the United States Space Program.

·                     The second shuttle to join the space program, Challenger hosted some of the most exciting first time events in American history. She flew nine successful missions and left a legacy of knowledge gleaned through experimentation conducted aboard during her short life of completed missions. Ten satellites were launched from her payload bay. Satellites that might have gone obsolete were repaired and returned to service. Challenger served the world well during her few years of service. Her final crew and she, herself, will live forever in the hearts of the many who worked at NASA during her existence And in the history books of the United States Space Program.

The Shuttle Program offered so many possibilities to the United States Space Program. It enabled us to do so many things beyond the realm of Earth and provided several spectacular firsts in history.

Thank you for allowing me to share a condensed version of my ten page research paper on Challenger. I enjoyed doing the research at the library and on the internet. Learning how to do a research paper has opened up many possibilities for me for future projects for writing future novels. It was a learning experience and well worth the time.

Cheers!

Too Many Possibilities = Chaos? by Alison Henderson

My life is gloriously chaotic right now. Everywhere I turn, I see more possibilities. We’ve been settled (ha!) in California for ten days, and so much has happened, yet very little is complete. I did manage to purchase, register, and insure my new car, but nearly everything else is still up in the air. My hubby and I have an appointment tomorrow morning at the DMV to register his car and get new drivers’ licenses. Judging by the quality of driving I see all around me, the test should be a piece of cake.

We’ve met with the contractor who will be turning our new (but sad and worn out) house into a dream home and approved the plans, and I can’t wait to get started. I get to pick out everything new from windows, to flooring, to kitchen cabinets. Of course, the converse is that I have to pick out everything new. So many choices! So many possibilities! The mind boggles and I’ve barely started.

And then there’s the yard. The lot was completely neglected and overgrown, so last week I hired a landscaping service to attack it with chainsaws, pruners, and stump grinders. It took a small army of men three days to whip the trees into shape and clear out decades’ worth of snarled undergrowth. Now that I can see what I’m dealing with, the possibilities once again are nearly overwhelming. Where do I even begin? I started by joining the local garden club. Now I’ll be able to get advice from local experts who know the ropes.

It put me in mind of my early days as a writer. I blundered along on my own through my first manuscript, but it wasn’t until I joined RWA and my local chapter that I learned the skills necessary to produce a publishable novel. Now I rely on my writer friends, including my fellow Roses of Prose and other authors at my publisher, for the advice and support to keep me going through the ups and downs of this crazy business. Hats off you ladies! I couldn’t do it without you.

Character Possibilities

An Iditarod winner and a nature magazine writer.

A cursed Celtic warrior and a teacher.

A firefighter and a photographer.

A corporate pilot and a graphic designer.

These are just some of the hero/heroine combinations I've written about so far. The possibilities for characters are endless. There are an infinite number of pairings, and I discover new ideas on a daily basis.

These possibilities can get overwhelming. A writer can spends gobs of time just trying to determine what jobs her characters will have. The jobs are really critical too. I find that the occupations help define who the character is and how she/he will react to certain events in the story. Jobs often influence how the characters will meet. Is he the landlord at the apartment she just rented? Is she the caterer hired by the corporation he works for? Is he the reporter who just uncovered the scandal at her law office? Is she the doctor who stitched his finger back on after his construction accident?

You get the idea.

I'm currently at a place where a hero is "speaking" to me. He's a voice in my head at the moment. A faint "Write about me" is growing in strength in my mind. He's a chainsaw artist and modeled after someone I've actually met and plan to interview. I think the character's name is Orion Finley. The heroine, however, has not revealed herself just yet. This is usually the way it is with me. The male character almost always makes himself known first, then the female follows.

Maybe you could give me some help. First, picture a lumberjack-ish dude who rocks flannel and is Picasso with a chainsaw. He's tall, has dark, chin-length hair that he wears back when he's working, has ripped arms that are muscled from years of chainsaw wielding. He fills a pair of faded jeans like he was born to do that very thing. Next, comment below with who you think would be a good match for a chainsaw artist. Give me an occupation and physical features if you'd like. Hell, I'll even take name suggestions.

Check me out on Amazon to read about any of the character pairings at the top of this post or my other heroes and heroines.

New beginnings!

This spring marks a new beginning for me. Yes, we moved to our new home almost 2 years ago (2 years in July), but this spring is the first one in which we don't have a legal black cloud hanging over our heads.

I didn't realize how much that affected me. I was sort of mired in indecision, waiting for the lawsuit to be resolved. Now that it is, I can actually look forward!

Part of looking forward is looking back, and to that end, I am on a Clean and Pitch kick. I'm going through Stuff -- you know what I mean, all those things that we move because we're not sure what to do with, all those CDs, and forgotten manuscripts, and papers, and ... stuff. I'm making a clean sweep and finally tossing it.

As part of this I did a clean sweep of old files on my computer, finally reading through some rough drafts. ::shaking head:: Why, oh, why, did I keep those? Some are truly bad, some are just ... eh ... and a couple are worth keeping.

This feels like more than Spring Cleaning to me. It feels like a Spring Start of something new. I'm not sure if it really will be that, but it's a great feeling nonetheless. Out with the old and in with ...

whatever!

"It's time," Agent Lady said.

As humans, we enjoy being comfortable. Routines help keep us ensconced in our comfort zones. For me, part of my writer comfort arena is my publisher. I can't say enough good things about them. I've been treated well at this small ePublisher. Even so, the thought niggles at the back of my mind:  Am I good enough to attract the interest of a larger house?

Call it ego. Call it ambition. Call it being in need of stronger validation, but I am finally listening to my agent. "It's time," she claims. "Time for you to allow me to 'shop out' your books instead of automatically submitting it to the place where you feel safe."

"You...you know I don't handle rejection well." I chewed on a hang nail, a nervous gesture.

Her hand came up and pushed my hand away from my mouth. "Put on your big girl bloomers and deal with the rejection. If one publisher doesn't like your stories, another one will. You've gotten stronger."

"Stronger? Has my deoderant petered out? " I sniffed at my armpit.

"Don't play that dumb act with me." She turned her glass around and around on the table while she glared in my direction.

Agents. They can be so bossy. They can also be a best friend, which she is. So, I opened myself up to the possibilies Dawn might help bring my way and sighed. "Okay."

I revamped my Christmas chapters I'd shared here, changed my characters and added another 30,000 words. We submitted it to Carina's Christmas submission extravaganza. Those chosen for thier holiday stories will be notified on the 15th of this month--in 3 days, not that I'm counting. I've opened myself to the possibilies. Granted they may well include rejection, but we've got plan B and plan C in place. Wish me luck.

Showering You With Possibilities In The Form Of A Free Download by Margo Hoornstra

Possibilities.

When I tried to come up with my definition of possibilities, options and opportunities came to mind. According to Noah Webster and others, the word possibilities means a future prospect or potential, the power of happening. All of which conjure up images of optimism and confidence. The skies the limit, if you will. And don’t we each have our own dreams and aspirations to fulfill?

My small way of showering you with possibilities, and maybe doing some dream aspiring too, is to share a free download of my latest release, Night Stars and Mourning Doves. This is the story of Eric and Elyse and sixth of the Dearly Beloved series from the Last Rose of Summer Line of The Wild Rose Press.

Today marks the middle day of a five day, April 9-13, giveaway on Amazon KDP Select. One click here takes you there.

Two pasts riddled with grief, one chance for happiness. Unless fate decides otherwise.

These are a couple of excerpts:

“Remodeling your home to accommodate Jay and me. Isn’t that a little extreme?”

Lips pursed, he shook his head. “Your mother and I have talked about adding on for years. Anyway, whatever we put into this house should increase its value eventually.” Setting aside the paper once and for all, his expression mellowed as he regarded his son. “Helping you out is helping us out.”

“It’s nice to hear you say that. And I want you to know I do appreciate what you’re doing for us. Especially Jay.”

“Losing your mother at any age is tough,” he replied as he stood. “It’s gotta be especially devastating when you’re as young as my grandson. He still needs someone to care for him like a mother, and Iris is more than up to the task.”

“She is that,” Eric began, then made himself quit talking.

Hard to admit, but he wanted someone to care for him, or at least listen when he needed them to. It wasn’t easy to look for a woman when you’re mortally injured and still require time to heal. Right now, it seemed all the time in the world would never make him whole again.

“You know how to work the security system.” Elyse pushed the necessary buttons on the installed coffee machine to make her morning brew.

“I know. But, I didn’t want to do that then walk in while you were asleep and scare you.”

There was no need to verbalize what they both knew too well. For all of the take charge exterior and fearless attitude displayed in her professional life, big sister scared easily when she was alone. Which became evident to both of them after an incident a couple of months after Elyse left Vince for good.

Angela had walked into the house without knocking and surprised her in an upstairs bedroom. It had taken her a full minute to stop screaming. Double that and more before she quit shaking.

Also, visit my Blog or Website to find more of my stories. Some of those are free too!

Enjoy!!
