I’m returning from two weeks in Kauai; about that, I have no complaint. How dare I? My topic is mixing writing with vacationing.
Okay, before I go into the vacation issue, I’m saying right here: I miss sun tanning. When I used to go to a beachy climate, I’d spend many hours in the sun, often with minimal sun screen. Within days, I looked so healthy and my brown skin clearly stamped me with a nut-brown ‘she’s on vacation’ look. When doctors screamed at us to STOP lying in the sun, the joy went out of the whole endeavor. I mean, why slather myself up with #50 SPF to be sure I won’t go toasty, then go lay out under a palapa IN THE SHADE, just to be sure those little melanomas and basal cells don’t get a grip on my skin? In the end, I order food and drink, gaining pounds and liver problems in place of skin cancer. Geesh! (Just so you know, I’m in the airport now, waiting with other vacationers, to board a plane to San Jose. Not one of them has a tan except for one surfer dude. Seriously.)
I digress. How many of you write when you’re on vacation? I do. I rise in the mornings to put in some hours and I also push out a scene in the afternoons after a nice glass of wine. In short, I’d say only two days out of seven of my vacations days are completely without writing time, and every day, I do some marketing, at least checking up on Facebook and if I’ve got a blog out, advertising the entry.
My question: How good are you at taking breaks from your work?
As you contemplate the question: here’s a picture of Koi in the pond at Duke’s an old surfing hangout near the Lihue Airport. We had beverages and calamari here; the Koi waited for a handout. Nope!

Vacations and Babies
Last year at this time, we were celebrating a wedding. A
beach wedding with a gorgeous sky and the perfect weather. Today we’re
celebrating their baby. My daughter and I wanted to have a baby shower, but who
wants to come to Michigan in February (the last time pregnant daughter-in-law
could fly). Instead we’re having a “welcome to the world” party for the
youngest member of our family. Although Hubs and I had seen her right after she was born, the rest of
our family hadn’t. My sisters, especially, are thrilled that the baby will be at her own shower.
So the Arizona family left 103° Thursday morning to
come to Michigan. DIL couldn’t get over the fact that she could have her coffee
outside in the summer. I thought it was too warm and humid, but it’s all
perspective, I guess. Yesterday, they picked blueberries with my daughter and
her two children (who were thrilled to play with their new cousin). Then they
all went to the beach. Son and DIL plan to show their daughter the beach where
they got married. Not that she’ll remember it. But if this becomes a regular
vacation for them, she will.
As for Hubs and I, it’s such a treat to have the whole family
together. A rare thing when we live 2,000 miles apart. Yesterday I started
freaking about everything that wasn’t done for the party. Then I held the little one. My
blood pressure went down (I’m sure), I relaxed, and all that was important was
holding her and watching her smile. She is just adorable, by the way. (I’m not prejudiced or anything.)
We don’t need to go anywhere to have a perfect vacation.

Seasons change, traditions change
My husband and I used to go north for a week every fall. When we lived in MN, this meant going almost to the Canadian border, to a resort we found. We loved it -- relaxing, getting away from it all, hiking, boating, and a bit of sightseeing. We did this for about 15 years. I loved it so much, I set a book at this resort (Mayhem, Marriage, and Murderous Mystery Manuscripts)
Then we moved it Iowa and suddenly a 3.5 hour trip north became an 8.5 hour trip. And our financial situation changed, too. My husband is no longer working in his highly paid tech job, so it's a bit more of a stretch to spend a week at a resort.
So, reluctantly, we canceled our trip for this year. I am going to miss it -- a lot. I already know that. But I have a multitude of other activities to fill my time, so maybe it won't be so bad. And maybe we'll go next year.
But right now I'm feeling very nostalgic for those marvelous "away" days Up North. I realize that life is change, but some changes are tricky to navigate....
Here's a picture from one of our trips. This was the view from our front porch. Yep. I'm going to miss it, I'm sure.
Sigh.

Vacation Destinations Numbers 1-5
And now to conclude my list of vacation destinations. If you missed numbers 6-10, find my August 4th post and catch up!
5. Bermuda
People keep telling me I should go, so I'll pop it on this list. Hey, I'm always open to suggestions. Especially ones that involve packing only a swimsuit.
4. New Orleans, Louisiana
I heart Harry Connick Jr. and Harry Connick Jr. hearts New Orleans. So...that's it.
3. Vermont
I have a place here. I eventually want to live here, but for now, I'll take weekending in this beautiful state with the quiet mountains. That's the view from my great room windows. Sick, right?
2. Bon Temps, Louisiana
Okay, okay, I know it's not a real place, but damn! I want to go there soooo bad. Click HERE to see a fun website about the True Blood fictional town.
1. Alaska
I went on a cruise here in 2000. Best vacation EVER! I'd love to go back and do a more land-focused tour. Get up close and personal with some Alaskan wildlife. Sometimes I reread parts of my book ALASKA HEART to pretend I'm there. Seriously, if you haven't been, go. You won't regret a single minute of it.
So I guess I'd better start saving for some of these excursions so I can cross them off my list. I do so love crossing things off lists.
Do you have any trips planned? Where to?
Toodles,
Chris
