No Noel this year by Barbara Edwards

The Christmas stories written on The Roses of Prose add so much joy to the holiday. I love what my friends share and am sorry I'm not joining in the fun this year. I'm working on two manuscripts and just couldn't fit  it in. I do want to remind everyone of my Christmas stories from The Wild Rose Press. I hope you all find the time to read them and they brighten your season.

Journey of the Magi
by Barbara Edwards
Blurb: Widow Noel Martin never breaks promises, and she promised her kids they'd have Christmas at her childhood home in Connecticut. But driving across country takes money. Noel is broke when a snowstorm blows them into a tiny Minnesota cafe owned by a man who can change her mind. She accepts his offer of a job. Despite her attraction to him, she makes it clear she is only temporary help.
Dan Longstreet isn't adopting any more strays, but he needs a waitress. Dan works so hard to make his cafe a success, he doesn't have time for love. Though Noel's slender blonde beauty stuns him and her two adorable children tug at his heart, he denies how they threaten to change his life.
When tragedy strikes, their new-found love is the first victim. Noel can't stay and Dan can't leave. Will their journey be the gift that reunites them?

Excerpt: An Arctic blast from the opening door fluttered napkins on the deserted tables in the darkened cafĂ©, extinguished the two remaining candles, and ruffled the sawdust spread on the floor to absorb the melting snow. Dan casually checked the baseball bat hooked under the counter. Only trouble arrived this late.
His gaze latched onto the petite female and he swore he smelled spring flowers. And sunshine. He couldn’t take his gaze off her as she undid the knitted green muffler wrapped three times around her coat’s up- turned collar to reveal a thin pinched face.
His chest ached with the urge to cradle her in his arms; she looked so cold. Even with her knit hat pulled down over her ears, her high cheekbones and the up- tilted tip of her nose flamed as bright red as a cheap statue of a Christmas elf. She blinked in the bright light.

Praise for Journey of the Magi
“With a deft touch of her brush, word artist Barbara Edwards paints an endearing story that showcases the true meanings of Christmas—love, sacrifice and the wide-eyed hopes of children. Her attention to detail, her ingenious stroke of the brush breathe life and love into this delightful story.”
~Vonnie Davis, award winning romance author

Late for the Wedding (Twelve Brides of Christmas Book 2)
by Barbara Edwards

Warm and rested at last, Nick and Heather explore their powerful attraction to each other, only to part when he delivers her, on time, to her sister’s wedding. But weddings breed weddings…

But will Ellen get the message, and more importantly, will she accept Dixie's gift?
Sexy newcomer Michael Burke can barely take enough time from his successful restaurant for a decent night's sleep, let alone romance. Trapped by a blizzard and aided by Dixie's Gift, Ellen and Michael find more than shelter--they find love.

He brushed a wisp of her hair from her cheek. It clung like spider silk to his fingers.
He rubbed the strand and his heart raced. When her lips parted, he bent forward to taste their soft curve.
Sweet, so sweet, he thought as her mouth melded with his. His hands slowly slid from her slender shoulders to her waist. Soft as a feather, she sighed. Her curves fit against his hard chest like matching puzzle pieces.
The lights blinked, dimmed, and then flared back on.

New, old, another year by Barbara Edwards

Barbara Edwards at Mt. St. Helens
Everyone is posting about their plans for the new year. I had plans myself. I was so organized. I listed the titles I plan to finish, the blogs I will be posting on so  I can do  the writing early instead of the last minute and promised I would write daily.

Well.

Guess where that all went?

The only one I’ve been consistent on is the daily writing. Not the numbers I wanted, but at least I’m keeping up with my blogs. I am working on one of my novels.

I find I am grieving and the sorrow is exhausting. My daughter-in-law Linda would tell me to power through the pain like she had to do as a ballet dancer, then professional dancer. I can only try. I picture her lining up the angels for Jazzercise class then Yoga.

So.

I made my list to work on.
Two paranormals for my Rhodes End series: Jacob’s story, Wolf’s Promise.
A romantic contemporary: War is Heck
Another romance: Broken Dreams.
I blog on Barbara Edwards Comments

I also got Scrivener for Dummies so I can use the Scrivener program more efficiently. I found that I like it but forget the details on using the parts.
For my own happiness, I need to write.

A new year is just that, new.

Grief and pain do pass. Life brightens and the one we lost is remembered with joy.
Linda didn’t read my novels, she said picturing me writing sex scenes made her nervous. I laughed and told her to read my Christmas shorts.

Since she loved dogs, she is in heaven with the my dog Dixie from Dixie’s Gift.

Thanksgiving at my house by Barbara Edward

Thanksgiving at my house this year.

Most of my family last summer
My husband and I are eating at home. Alone.

As you know, my husband and I have a large family. All our children are married with children of their own. So where are the multiple invitations to various houses? We didn’t get even one this year.

Don’t get me wrong. I really tried not to be hurt. After all, I knew years ago my daughters-in-law would want to spend holidays with their families and I tried to be understanding. One or the other would say, hey, come over here. We’re having turkey with so-n-so, but there’s room for two more.

I'll admit It made me itch to be the the add-on.

His family? Hey, what can I say? His daughters host his ex-wife and her husband every holiday. And they are uncomfortable with us there. To be honest, I was, too. I gave a sigh of relief we’re not invited, but his feelings are hurt that neither his two sons or two daughters included him.

So we’re planning a festive meal together. Cornish game hens since even a small turkey is too much, brussels sprouts, corn bread, baked potatoes, fresh-made cranberry sauce, cranberry bread,

We’ll overeat and sleep through the football games.

We’ll take the dog for a walk if its nice. Or snowing.

I’ll Thank God for my family and pray for every good thing to be theirs. I’ll include my husband's family since I do like theI

I’ll exchange smiles with my husband and Thank God that he survived his bladder cancer last winter.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

Take an afternoon and read my Christmas novella to get in the mood.

Betwixt anf Between by Barbara Edwards #twrp

The approach of cold weather is a flurry of activity for me. I’m packing my summer clothes in the camper for our trip south, unpacking the jackets and coats to use until we leave, and deciding what I’ll need for my writing.

I’ve finally adjusted to the changes involved in my writing habits. I have an area in our house where I’ve got what I need. In the camper there’s not a lot of space and I struggled to write.
Last winter I finally found that place. it was inside me. I was the only obstacle. When I let go of the need for that perfect writing desk, my ‘things’ in order, the chair i prefer, it all worked.

Right now I am betwixt and between. The Brides of Christmas Anthology Book 1 was released this week. My novella, Dixie’s Gift will be available Dec 7. So  i’m caught up in promotion, working on edits to a complete manuscript, writing the next two Rhodes End Series books and my blogs.

All this has to continue when we travel. I use a hotspot on my phone for internet connections and this is a real advantage most of the time. My laptop computer has a long-life battery and I can type all day anywhere. Nice.

So why am I telling you all this? Because it’s hard writing. Any encouragement when its not easy is a gift. Not every day goes well or results in finished pages. So here’s to a new season! To another story! To using change!

My favorite season? Autumn by Barbara Edwards #TWRP #MFRWauthor

Barbara Edwards
I love Autumn. The cool nights, Indian Summer, pumpkins and trees cover with rich colors combine to prepare me for shutting down for the winter.

Did you know its not a true Indian Summer unless there is a killing (black) frost first? As a kid I thought the warm days meant those lazy days were back. Only the water was suddenly too cold to swim.

My neighbors had the fire department send over a crew when they burned the hillside behind their house. The idea was to get rid of the leaves piled high under the trees.

The scent of leaves burning is one of my favorite memories. My Dad would rake up all the leaves in the yard and pile them. We’d jump in the pile for hours. By the time the town came to collect them they were squashed into a tiny heap. lol
Pumpkins were cheap and each of us got one to carve for Halloween.

I can’t believe I managed not to cut off a finger with the huge kitchen knife I used.

This was when the days shortened. Night came before dinner. We played hide-and-seek in the cemetery next door until Mom called us home. Scary fun.

Mom made our costumes for Trick-or-Treating. Princess, hobo, clown, I don’t remember the rest.
A gang of us went from house to house. In our small town it was hard to go where we weren’t known. Something not so common now.
One Halloween it snowed. Another it was so hot we had to wear shorts under our costume.
I’ll never admit to throwing an egg at a boy’s house because I thought he was cute.
Hope you have good memories, too

My new Christmas Story, Dixie's Gift will be released soon. A lost puppy, a lonely widow, a confirmed bachelor trapped by a blizzard. Can they find Dixie's Gift?

Working on the next story by Barbara Edwards #TWRP

Barbara Edwards
I finally realized that switching from editing to writing to editing was the reason why I feel so tired. People tend to forget that creativity used the right-brain and analysis uses the left-brain.
I know I did.

in case you didn’t know, there are a number of scientific studies about people having a dominant side to their brain which influences their career path. Accountants are considered left-brain. Writers are considered right-brain.

Only its not that simple. Writers  do more than write. Besides creating a new story,  we need to analyze our plot, plan character details, and keep track of all the fine points.
so we switch back and forth.

This month has been a challenge. I finished the last edit on Dixie’s Gift, a holiday romance for The Wild Rose Press. I worked on Jacob’s story, a paranormal romance for my Rhodes End Series. Also worked on Book four in the Rhodes end Series. To make it more difficult I got distracted by a dream about Max and had to start his story.
With the work I’ve been doing on War is Heck, I am twisting my brain in spirals. And I’m no-where near done.
Dixie’s Gift will be released shortly.

I plan to finish the rewrites on War is Heck in the next couple weeks.
Jacob, Max and Daniel from book four are all hanging over my head, waiting their turns.
Doing this, I also realized I love writing more and more.

OOps, I forgot the short story for the Roses of Prose Christmas.

Taking a Break by Barbara Edwards #MFRWAuthor #ahashare

Barbara Edwards
Writing is work. I know some authors claim its also fun, but i find the work part overwhelms the fun. So I need to find ways to energize myself. Change with the seasons.

In the winter we’re near the beach so a walk in the sand is wonderful. My husband won’t believe it, but I also like
Niagara Falls
walking in new-fallen snow.

Writing a book takes time. Lots of time to finish seventy or eighty thousand words. i’ve spent a year writing, polishing, editing a manuscript. And I envy authors who write faster. I’ve learned to take a break, only it has to help me concentrate on what I’m doing.
This year I finally succeeded in getting my perennial garden to bloom. It’s been five long
years since planted a rose bush at each corner. Then day lilies, oriental lilies and foxglove. I planted daffodils and tulips for early color.
Plants are weird. Unless you want to spend more money and time, the plant needs to like where you place it.

My husband suggested mulching the first year. my marigolds topped out at three inches tall. I know they’re annuals, but I wanted to fill in the blank spots.
I tried different plants. Hollyhocks didn’t come back.
Gerbera daisies sent up one measly shot with no flowers. The oriental daisies had babies and looked beautiful.
I can only show you my pictures and hope you enjoy their color as much as I do.

Coming soon  a holiday story from the Wild Rose Press, Dixie's Gift.
Dixie's ghost brings hope and love to a lost puppy, a lonely widow and a single man In a new England blizzard.
It's dedicated to Dixie, my Belgian Malinois.
Dixie was a Belgian Malinois and my best friend for years. She died of cancer and I miss her every day. This story is in her memory.
Belgian Malinois are wonderful dogs, loyal, intelligent and protective. Their only flaw is they need to be with their owner, not in a dog cage or kennel.
They are used by police departments, the Federal government, and the military for everything from drug dogs to bomb detection. They have saved lives across the world.
Many are available for adoption. I follow American Malinois Rescue on FaceBook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1389286684645077/
