A Little Thursday Throwback Special for Hot/Cold Month....

I like to play the opposites game. In fact, the novel I recently contracted with Harlequin Superromance and recently finished revising is about opposites attracting - and, boy, was it a lot of fun to write!

Today to honor those age-old opposites hot/cold and as an homage to one of my favorite days of the week, Throwback Thursday, I'd like to share a deleted scene from my western romance novel, Bet It On My Heart, with hot cowboy hero Keefe Ridge and his heroine, Calli Morlani, a tough city-slicker who does her best to remain cool and collected around Wayback, Texas's most charming son. Let's see how well that works out for her here....

[For those who have read the book, this deleted scene was originally placed the morning-after the first love scene, Keefe and Calli's "roll in the hay." Due to the story's novella length, it was removed during the editing process.  I love the scene so much, however, that I had to share :) ]

The fact that some time in the night Keefe had left her alone in the hay didn’t occur to Calli until early the next morning when a mournful loe from the corral outside jerked her awake. The place beside her clearly empty, she tugged the horse blanket up over her torso and frowned around the dim space. No cowboys lurked despite the low light peaking through thin wall slats and dust that turned lazy circles in the still air.

Her good-lovin’ cowpoke had been gone for some time.

It took five irritating minutes to locate all her missing garments. It was bad enough having to face the walk of shame across the barnyard, but the man could have had the decency to walk right along with her.

She exited the barn cautiously, peering around to ensure no ranch hands or other early risers were in sight. The only pairs of eyes around to see her flee the scene of the crime, mussed and rumbled, were the dull black of a heifer chewing lethargically on a sprig of grass. Pulling on one heel then the other, she picked her way through the shadows leading to the ranch house.
Not so much as a whistle or a breeze cut across the yard and she breathed easy once she reached the porch steps. There were several trucks in the drive. All she had to do was grab a set of keys from the mud room peg, figure out which four-wheel drive they controlled and hightail it back to her room at the bed-and-breakfast.

The door was unlocked so she tiptoed across the distressed floorboards. She took four and a half steps before someone cleared a throat and ruined her chances of escape.

“Mornin’, Miz Morlani.”

Scowling, she faced the lean, masculine figure leaning against the doorjamb. He was dressed in boots, Levi’s, and a fresh workshirt. Underneath the brim of his Stetson, his blue eyes practically glittered with mischievous light and his mouth was spread wide in a smirk that made all those melting sensations from their roll in the hay rush back in full force.

“Damn it, Keefe,” she hissed, fighting a smile. “I thought you were Nuala.”

“That would have been unfortunate for the both of us. For a housekeeper, she’s a tyrant in the early morning.” He lifted the mug gripped in one wide-palmed, capable hand and cocked a brow.

“Coffee?”

She sighed. It was a bribe, and a good one. “Gimme.”

Before she could take the mug for her own, his free hand snaked out and gripped her wrist, tugging her toward him. Despite her hushed protests, he managed to manuveur her back snug up against the doorjamb with his hard torso pressed close against hers and his arms around her.

“Whoa— Uh uh, mister.” She planted her hands on his shoulders and felt nothing but sinew and strength through the soft chambray. “I don’t think so.”

The smirk still dangled from his lips, a temptation she was fighting harder and harder to ignore. “You don’t get your straight shot of caffeine until I get my morning-after kiss.”

“You play a dangerous game, cowpoke. Men have died for less than coming between me and my first  cup of joe.”

He lowered those full, upturned lips down to hers until a bare inch separated his mouth from hers.
“For all your fancy talk and diplomas, this is one cowpoke you don’t intimidate.”

And that in a nutshell was what had drawn her to Keefe Ridge to begin with. Her heart pattered hard against her breastbone as he lowered his mouth just enough to nibble her lower lip. The joints of her knees warmed, nearly collapsed inward, as the sinuous shudders of heat she’d felt the night before assailed her.

Dangerous, indeed.

“Now…let’s try this again, slick.” Breathing deep the scent of hay that no doubt clung to her, he closed his eyes and tipped his brow to hers in a gesture of unexpected tenderness. “Mornin’, Miss Morlani,” he murmured.

Her arms came around him. She’ d have thought it was more for support than anything else…but that would have made her a fool. It might have been silly and weak, but she wanted him to hold her in this quiet, sweet morning light—and keep on holding her for a long, long time.

She kissed him deep then turned her face into the warmth of his shoulder to hide a beaming grin. “Good morning, Mr. Ridge.”

Oh, and a small bit of happy news - my April Harlequin Superromance debut, A Place Called Briar, has received a 4-Star Review from RT Book Reviews!

Great description and engaging characters make this story an entertaining read. Cole is nicely developed and his despair over losing his son and Briar’s worry over the potential loss of her inn are both well drawn. The secondary characters, such as Briar’s tenants, are also quite fun and nicely crafted.

That noise you hear is me bouncing off the walls, I'm so thrilled! Readers can preorder the Kindle edition of A Place Called Briar for just $3.82! Look for the mass market paperback edition wherever books are sold April 1st!

Happy reading for the month of March! Until next month,

Amber Leigh Williams

Meet the Ridges of Wayback, TX!

Hi Roses! In the past when I've tried to sit down with one of the heroes from my backlist, the others tend to intrude. So, naturally, when it came down to choosing one to showcase this month here at Roses of Prose, I couldn't quite narrow down the field. These interviews appeared last year exclusively to newsletter subscribers so enjoy a taste of Wayback, TX and the three, cowboy heroes from my Ridges of Wayback, TX trilogy!

We start with the hero of 1st Place More Than Magic Novella Blackest Heart, the silent cowboy Judd Black....

America's Sweetheart, Stella Ridge has been away from Wayback for fifteen years paving her way to the top of the acting business. When a car accident leaves her physically and emotionally scarred, the only place she wants to go is home to Texas and her family's ranch.
The changes that have taken place since her departure are enough to rock her world again. She uncovers a buried tragedy, struggles with the penetrating stares and questions from townsfolk, and comes up against an intriguing and unexpected spark with the silent cowboy and champion bull rider, Judd Black. Their wounded souls draw them together and Stella begins to realize that only in him can she find the solace she sought by leaving the bright lights of Hollywood.

Name: Judd Black *WHO ANSWERED THESE INTRUSIVE QUESTIONS ON PAPER*

Childhood Ambition: To strike out on my own.

Fondest Memory: Learning the ropes on Ridge Range at my adoptive father’s hand.

Soundtrack: Johnny Cash live from Folsom.

Retreat: The house I built not far from the Range.

Wildest Dream: To become a bull-riding champion. Which I did. (Twice, but who’s counting?)

Biggest Challenge: Overcoming the life I lived before Wayback.

Proudest Moment: Riding my first bull without getting bucked.

Alarm Clock: Elwood, my dog.

First Job: Shoveling manure at Ridge Range.

Perfect Day: Any good day on the Range or at the Yellow Rose Corral.

Indulgence: Whiskey.

Last Purchase: Hay.

Favorite Movie: Anything with Stella Ridge….

Inspiration: Jim Black (my adoptive father and an Apache descendent)

When I’m mad I brood.

Now for the hero of Bluest Heart - the second novella in the Ridges of Wayback, TX trilogy, Casey Ridge....

The Wayback bachelor is a dying breed, but that doesn't stop Casey Ridge from wanting to settle down. For this cowboy anyone but Josie Brusky would be an easy wrangle. Unfortunately for him, the Blue Bug singer and owner of Josie's Treasures doesn't believe in commitment much less marriage.
Years ago, Josie lost her heart to Casey's charm and dimpled smile. Since then she has done everything she knows to forget him. After all, she's known as the local harlot and the daughter of the town's biggest bigot. Casey could have any girl he wanted. Why would he saddle himself with her? In the wake of a shattering past, she refuses to give up her independence.
Name: Casey Ridge

Childhood Ambition: To be a heart surgeon. Who knew, right?

Soundtrack: Kenny Chesney’s “You Save Me.” Makes me think of a special someone. (*ahem* Josie)

Retreat: The wide open plains of Ridge Range.

Wildest Dream: To make Josie Brusky mine.

Proudest Moment: Getting a scholarship to medical school.

Biggest Challenge: Besides making Josie Brusky mine? Adjusting to the fact that I’ll never be anything more than a ranch hand here in Wayback. My father needs me here at home, though, so it’s worth it.

Alarm Clock: The family cattle.

Perfect Day: Any day I get to “bump” into Josie and aggravate her ;)

First Day: Riding out with my father, brother, and all the other ranch hands when I was eight. Being a cowboy was ingrained from childhood. Or birth.

Indulgence: Gee, I wonder. *grins*

Last Purchase: My tab at The Blue Bug Saloon.

Favorite Movie: Lonesome Dove.

Inspiration: Leland Ridge (my father).

When I’m mad I pretty much sulk.

Last but not least, we have Keefe Ridge of Bet it on my Heart, the conclusion to the Ridges of Wayback, TX trilogy....

ANTE UP! Keefe Ridge's bronc-busting days are nearly over. Despite that and the fact that he is slowly making his dream business venture a reality, Wayback's wildest cowboy doesn't see any reason to settle down. He is even willing to bet that marriage isn't in the cards at all for him.
Agent Calli Morlani came to Wayback on a mission: to bring Stella Ridge back to Hollywood. When Stella refuses, she dares Calli to take in some local color and see what Wayback has to offer. Whether that includes Stella's devastatingly charming brother becomes irrevelant once Calli finds herself in bed with him - in more ways than one…
Will it take a tough city girl to make the Wayback playboy finally fall long and hard? Or will Keefe give Calli a reason to stay? Place your bet!
Name: Keefe Ridge

Childhood Ambition: To work Ridge Range alongside my father.

Fondest Memory: Riding my first bronc.

Soundtrack: Jason Aldean. I love “Big Green Tractor” for several different reasons J

Retreat: The West Texas countryside. There’s nothing like it.

Wildest Dream: To be a stock car racer. Or a bronc-rider. Both are dangerous and equally appealing to a daredevil like myself.

Proudest Moment: It was a sunset on Ridge Range after my brother Casey came back from college. The two of us and our father had just finished herding cattle into the north pasture and were stranding together watching the land sink into darkness. A simple moment with a lot of meaning.

Biggest Challenge: Learning to let go of my mother’s betrayal…and accepting Judd Black into the family after my sister fell in love with him.

Alarm Clock: Usually the walk of shame back to Ridge Range after a long night on the town…. Either that or the housekeeper, Nuala, banging pots together to get me to work on time.

Perfect Day: A normal day on the Range in any season except summer. Wrap it up with a night at The Blue Bug Saloon running up my bar tab…and maybe teaching a certain, sexy city-slicker (*cough* Calli) to play some pool ;)

First Job: Stable hand for Wayback’s rodeo show.

Indulgence: Without a doubt, the ladies.

Last Purchase: Warrior’s Way, a four-year-old grey thoroughbred stallion. He’s a stubborn one. I’m sure we’ll understand each other well.

Favorite Movie: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Inspiration: Eastwood. And I guess I have to go with Casey on this one, too, and say my father.

When I’m mad I…unlike my diplomatic brother, in this case, I’m inclined to use fists if they’re warranted. Right, Judd?

You can have the hunky heroes of the Ridges of Wayback, TX trilogy all to yourself - all three titles are available now from The Wild Rose Press in ebook format! Audio readers can now own the trilogy as an audio book collection from AudioLark!

Keeping up with the Roses...

Hi readers! I’m excited about The Roses of Prose’s new direction and new members. My name is Amber Leigh Williams and I’ve been blogging with The Roses of Prose since it began. For those who don’t know me, I’m a multi-published romance author, a member of Romance Writers of America, and former Secretary of GCCRWA. I’m a passionate writer, reader, and blogger here at The Roses of Prose, western romance site Sweethearts of the West, and my personal blog The Cozy Page!

When I was a child, I had difficulty learning to read so in third grade I was enrolled in a reading program designed to accelerate my reading skills. I owe that program both my love of reading and writing. Not only did reading become easier, I developed a keen interest in storytelling itself. The next year, my teacher gave a book-writing assignment. I chose to retell Cinderella. The resulting story was created on construction paper with Crayola markers and it was then laminated. The finished product gave me a tingly, champagne-bottle feeling and I spent the rest of my childhood chasing that sensation with several short, young adult manuscripts that I hope never see the light of day. In high school, my mother gave me a romance novel by Nora Roberts to read. From that point on, I wanted to write and publish my own romance novel.

I’m happy to say that my first romance manuscript, after being revised several times, has been published in the last several years. The historical romance, Forever Amore, based in World-War-II Italy was nominated by Long & Short Reviews for Best Book of 2009! It is published with Black Lyon Publishing.

In the last five years, I've discovered a new passion: western romance! I published a contemporary western romance trilogy called the Ridges of Wayback, TX. The trilogy follows the ranching family, the Ridges - primarily siblings, Stella, Casey, and Keefe Ridge. The first book, Blackest Heart, was the 1st Place Novella in the 2009 More Than Magic Contest. Silent cowboy, Judd Black, also happens to be my favorite hero! Last year, a follow-up entitled Bluest Heart and the final book in the trilogy, Bet it on my Heart were published back-to-back. The ebooks are available at The Wild Rose Press.

In addition to ebooks, the trilogy was chosen by The Wild Rose Press to be published as an audio book collection with newly redesigned covers. All three audio books are available now at AudioLark.

Blackest Heart was also chosen to be published in a paperback anthology, The Way Back Home, with two other western romances by Marguerite Arotin and Abbey MacInnis. The Wild Rose Press has published my romantic suspense novel, Denied Origin. I’m represented by D4EO Literary Agency. In progress are my paranormal romance series, a Regency romance, and a contemporary romance revision.

This year I redesigned my official author website, www.amberleighwilliams.com. There you can sign up for my exclusive reader newsletter. Subscribers get a treat every month in the form of an interview with a hero or heroine from my backlist. My EXTRAS page was updated this month to include bonus material from a few of my books: read a sexy, short story called “Wayback Valentine” and a fun deleted scene from Bet it on my Heart here: http://www.amberleighwilliams.com/extras.

Readers, I’d love to connect with you on Twitter! I’m also on Facebook and Goodreads. Visit my blog, The Cozy Page, this month for the 30 Days of Promo Goodness event where readers can learn about new books, guest authors' takes on the promotional process, and win tons of book-related prizes!

Currently, I live on the Gulf Coast of Alabama with my husband, Jacob, and our three labs! I'm looking forward to getting to know our new Roses and getting settled in again here at The Roses of Prose! My question for readers today is where in the world is this post finding you today?
