That way there would be no need for picky people like me to debate whether Rhett Butler should be slapped or applauded. And also because if it wasn't a rape scene, that would have been some really good cinema. Then again, I realize the movie was made in 1939 and the fade to black moment was the proper way to end it.... I'm like you in terms of picking apart plots and characterizations now (after studying all that writer stuff). I'm with you on Sleepless in Seattle. Really?? I remember Gone with the Wind the same as Alicia--Scarlett was overcome by Rhett's manliness, in all its forms. :-) But it's definitely not PC in today's world, and a topic for a whole other discussion. Great post!Leah St. Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11004006100786260893noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023937099212820339.post-32729066297126827692014-08-07T01:16:04.578-04:002014-08-07T01:16:04.578-04:00Alicia, I think the book addresses the details of ...Alicia, I think the book addresses the details of this scene a bit more than the movie. It's been years since I read it. Scarlett was satisfied by the experience but also "ashamed." In the book, though, I seem to remember it reading more as a hot love scene than a rape scene. But like I said, it's been years.... I know it's good when I get so lost in the story and acting that I don't notice any flaws in the characters or plot. It's rare but it happens! As for Rhett, I've talked about that scene often. I love it! :) I don't believe he forced himself on her, even though he was a bit forceful in the beginning, but I'm sure she quickly succumbed to his charms. She certainly was wearing a big smile the next morning. And humming if I recall. :)Alicia Deanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12003539473772776004noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023937099212820339.post-67919411506303255742014-08-06T17:08:44.987-04:002014-08-06T17:08:44.987-04:00I also have a problem with the 'off' behav...I also have a problem with the 'off' behavior. I can't stop judging and do stop watching or reading what irritates me. Holt Bradford from Suzanna's Surrender by Nora Roberts comes to mind. Or, for movies, Luc from French Kiss or (speaking of You've Got Mail) Tom Hanks as Joe Fox!Amber Leigh Williamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16583347236334318332noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023937099212820339.post-68658919037555824222014-08-06T12:07:08.959-04:002014-08-06T12:07:08.959-04:00Liz, I think a lot of people do. It wasn't until a few years ago (right around the pregnancy) that I started analyzing movies the way I do books, lol Amber Leigh Williamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16583347236334318332noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023937099212820339.post-65467982790309106862014-08-06T08:39:36.501-04:002014-08-06T08:39:36.501-04:00I, too, pick everything apart now. Yes, he can have been a bad boy in the past--if he regrets his behavior and has turned over a new leaf (if you'll excuse the cliches.) But he doesn't get to treat the heroine badly in the present, or I'm not going to read (or watch) until the end. Also, it makes the heroine look like an idiot if she's willing to put up with crap like that!Jannine Gallanthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17692098634695675967noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023937099212820339.post-36407460368152695252014-08-06T08:15:39.178-04:002014-08-06T08:15:39.178-04:00I think I read (and watch movies) much more innoce...I think I read (and watch movies) much more innocently than I write.
