The mission, should you choose to accept it: study college
student behavior and report back to me.
Hi, it's Donna Michaels and that is the mission I gave my daughter’s cat Franco before we left
her dorm last month. This is Jes’ junior year in college and she’s going to
rush a sorority this fall/spring, depending on the ‘house’ she is interested
in.
So exciting! This works out great for me too, because I’ll be writing a book in an
N/A collection with two incredible authors next spring that focuses on three sorority
sisters and a mystery at their college. I can hardly wait!
Did I also mention it’ll be first person? New ground for me. I’m excited about the challenge, but need all the help I could
get. So, I enlisted Franco’s services to take notes and keep up
on the research for me while I make my other deadlines.
Here are a few shots of
him hard at work.
Pretending to chill while secretly recording activity in the common area |
I'm not sure what he's looking for...and I'm not sure I want to know |
Keeping an eye on the parking lot for any suspicious activity |
Lulling them in with cuteness. They must've been on to him |
I'm not sure why he's inspecting my daughter's finger. It'll be in the report |
This is where he told them to get the camera out of his face, they were going to blow his cover |
So, as you can see, I’m pretty sure he has a lot to tell me the next time we meet. Jes will fill me in on the rushing and all the steps involved, but Franco…he’s
going to have the juicy stuff about college life in general so I get
the vibe right. He’s my inside guy.
An author’s life...so exciting! We get to talk to some amazing
people...and cats…to get the facts. Just imagine all the good stuff your pets could report...
Hope you have a great September.
Thanks for reading,

Franco is adorable! And, I'm sure, more than up to the mission.
ReplyDeleteHow fun! My older son was in a fraternity, and after one visit to the house--I'll spare you the details--I was more than happy to NOT have a mole to report back on the goings-on. But those were guys. :-) Franco looks like he'll be quite vigilant in his reportage. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a cutie. Sounds like you have an excellent inside source. Good luck with your project, Donna!
ReplyDeleteJust make sure he doesn't change loyalties and decide not to tell you everything...Cat detectives are sort of like that!
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could attach a camera to the kitty (no one will have to know). Sometimes one has to see it to believe it! What a gorgeous cat...and how fun to live those college days vicariously through your daughter.
ReplyDeleteIf the cat fails on his mission, he can come live with me. I'm writing a book in first person. It's a fun change. Part of me wants to write it in present tense, but I don't know that I'm up for that challenge. Good luck with your story. I'm sure it'll be great.
ReplyDeleteA great helper you have there, Donna. Be sure to share his report with us. We may need the inspiration. I love writing in 1st person POV--my cozy mysteries and my new sci-fi romance. Vonnie, I tried present tense with the sfr novella. I had a hard time staying in the present; ended up changing it to past tense. It feels like talking to the reader. Best wishes, Donna. And have fun!
ReplyDeleteDonna, I LOVE Franco! I bet he's BMOC. Good luck with your experiment writing 1st person. I've never tried it, but maybe one of these days...
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun project! But, you might need another spy. Jes doesn't seem to be all that into this covert operation. :)
ReplyDeleteHe's a double agent - I'm sure of it.
